West Side Campaign Against Hunger (WSCAH), one of New York City’s leading emergency food providers, is kicking off its annual Healthy Foods Holiday Challenge. For over a decade WSCAH has been distributing 1,000’s of turkeys to their customers throughout November, in addition to their monthly distribution of healthy foods to over 100,000 customers, to ensure their families can share a holiday meal together. To meet the diverse needs of the communities they serve WSCAH will have pork shoulders and vegetarian options for our customers this year.
WSCAH’s impact stretches across New York City through its extensive partnerships with dozens of community distribution sites and innovative programs including home delivery. Their largest site is their 86th Street distribution center, where customers have been seeking food at unprecedented rates. In August 2024 at WSCAH’s 86th Street pantry, they distributed over 8,000 food boxes – 20% more than last August. Because of the increased need, WSCAH has set a goal of raising $320,000 that will provide 16,000 holiday food boxes each including a turkey, pork shoulder, or vegetarian item and other special holiday foods this November. With your help, WSCAH can reach this milestone and ensure no table goes empty and no family is left behind.
“WSCAH has truly been a blessing to our family, we can focus on gathering together despite all the insecurities. This is the light in times of darkness. Thank you.” — WSCAH customer
Be a part of WSCAH’s Healthy Foods Holiday Challenge so that 16,000 New Yorkers will be able to share holiday meals with their families. A donation of just $75 provides a family in need with a turkey, pork shoulder, or vegetarian option plus healthy groceries containing 50% fresh produce for their holiday meal.
There are also volunteer opportunities for teens and adults (age 16+) that you can sign up for through NY Cares and several family friendly volunteer opportunities that you can find more info on here. Hunger does not stop for the holidays, and with continued high food prices, rent increases, and reductions in allotments from government programs WSCAH and their customers need your help.
