On February 20 from 6:00-7:30, the NYC chapter of the Hearing Loss Association of America will present Thomas Powers, an expert on over-the counter hearing aids, and Barbara Weinstein, a prominent audiologist, consultant and educator. Dr. Powers will discuss issues related to OTC devices, including the availability of a return policy, reviewing technical specifications, finding the right device, and how to obtain the products. Dr. Weinstein will speak about new developments in hearing aids.
Thomas A. Powers, Ph.D., is the Founder/Managing Member of Powers Consulting, providing management consulting to the hearing health industry. Dr. Powers received his B.S. from SUNY Geneseo, and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Audiology from Ohio University. He began his career as a partner in an audiology private practice, followed by over 35 years in the hearing aid industry. Prior to his current role, he was Vice-President, Government Services and Professional Relations for Sivantos, Inc. During his tenure at Siemens/Sivantos he was the Compliance Officer for seven years. He currently holds an appointment as an Adjunct Instructor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Ohio University.
Dr. Powers serves as expert audiology consultant and strategic advisor for the Hearing Industries Association, partner in Amplifi Hearing, executive consultant for Healthcare Technologies and Methods, market consultant for Audio Focus, Inc., consultant for Lockheed Consulting Inc. In 1988, he had the unique opportunity to fit former President Ronald Reagan with Siemens hearing instruments at the White House.
Dr. Barbara E. Weinstein received her Ph.D. from Columbia University where she began her academic career as a young faculty member. A Professor and Founding Executive Officer of the Health Sciences Doctoral Programs at the Graduate Center, CUNY, Dr. Weinstein also holds a position as an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at NYU Langone Medical Center in NYC. The author of both editions of Geriatric Audiology, Dr. Weinstein is the 2022 recipient of the Distinguished Almunus Award from her alma mater, Columbia University. Professor Weinstein developed the world’s most widely used tools to identify patients with hearing loss which has been translated into 20+ different languages and is used globally to document the negative health effects associated with age related hearing loss and the outcomes associated with hearing aid use, audiologic rehabilitation, and counseling. Dr. Weinstein’s primary research interests include hearing loss, dementia and social isolation, physician-patient communication, screening of age-related hearing loss, person –centered care delivery and quantification of patient reported outcomes. Dr. Weinstein has long advocated for the integration of hearing health care into the mainstream be it cultural, medical or religious institutions. Her research on hearing loss, face masks-COVID-19, dementia, and social consequences of hearing loss, have profound implications at the intersection of audiology, public health, and society.
