Hey kids (and grownups too), looking for something spooktacular to do for Halloween in the neighborhood? Look no further! The Cathedral of Saint John the Divine is once again holding its annual Halloween Extravaganza and Procession of the Ghouls!
Starting October 28, at 7pm and again at 10pm, you can take in a chilling screening of the classic silent movie, Nosferatu, (1922) by German film director F.W. Murnau, starring Max Schreck as the ghoulish Count Orlok, a vampire! Scary stuff. The film will be accompanied by creepy tunes played on the Cathedral’s Great Organ by Timothy Brumfield.
But wait, the nightmare’s not over! The roll of the credits will be followed by the Procession of the Ghouls, presented by artists-in-residence Ralph Lee and the Mettawee River Theatre Company, a ghostly parade of demons and witches to scare and delight audiences. Ghouls and goblins will fill the cathedral and march through the church in a parade down the aisles, stopping to stare and interact with audience members with tricks and treats. Boo! The Mettawee River Theater Company, has been dramatizing, legends, myths and folk tales for over 35 years, incorporating giant puppets, masks and figures with fantastic music and movement.
And for more thrills and chills, October 29 will also begin the return of the Cathedral’s famous Crypt Crawls, ushering visitors into the rarely-seen depths of the spectacular gothic building. For those interested, more information and tickets are available here.
The Cathedral is located in Morningside Heights at 1047 Amsterdam Avenue (at 112th Street).
