Police are adding patrols near houses of worship on the Upper West Side after a man shouting anti-Semitic slurs killed 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue on Saturday.
“The 20 Pct is doing additional patrols to all houses of worship,” the precinct wrote on its Twitter account on Saturday. “If you see something suspicious around any Synagogue/Church/Mosque, DON’T HESITATE to call 911. You’re not ‘bothering’ us- it’s our job. And it’s OK if suspicious activity proves innocuous… better safe than sorry.”
That includes the JCC on Amsterdam Avenue and 76th Street. The JCC sent out a message to members reassuring them that “Your safety is our highest priority. Be assured that the Marlene Meyerson JCC Manhattan is doing what is necessary, some of which you see and much of which you do not, to make sure that everything possible is being done to ensure the safety of us all.”
Please join UWS congregations, schools, and the JCC community for a vigil and memorial at 6:30-7:30 pm tonight (Sun, Oct 28), at Congregation Anshe Chesed (251 W 100 St, btw B'way & West End Ave). People of all backgrounds and faiths are welcome. pic.twitter.com/C7zCNKYsjl
