West Siders have a unique opportunity this weekend to learn how to get involved in meaningful issues impacting the community and beyond.
On Sunday, December 10th, the JCC-Manhattan is sponsoring a “Democracy Sunday” to enable and encourage West Siders to speak with representatives from experienced community organizations doing social justice work across a wide variety of issues, including climate change, housing justice, and immigrant and refugee rights.
Almost two dozen organizations will send representatives to the JCC lobby at Amsterdam Avenue and 76th Street, between 11AM and 4PM, to discuss the mission of each organization, volunteer opportunities, and how to help in a way tailored to the needs of the volunteer. The JCC is asking people to register for one of three orientation sessions here.
“It is a wonderful way to connect people who want to be more active in their community with organizations which will help them do that,” said Sonia Alexander, the Program Director and Community Organizer at the JCC Center for Social Responsibility.
The JCC will also conduct orientations to help attendees decide which organizations might be of interest to them, determine the best way in which they can contribute, and the needs and goals each wants to fulfill. An orientation is not required to attend, but might give attendees a better sense of the organization that suits their own needs.
