Ever wanted to learn to play an instrument, or help your child learn to play? Do you enjoy free concerts at low-key neighborhood spots? Thankfully, there’s a place for you.
The Bloomingdale School of Music on 108th street is one of the neighborhood’s gems, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching people how to play music, whether they’ve been practicing for years or can’t tell a French horn from French toast.
The school turns 50 this year and will be putting on several events to celebrate. New executive director Erika Floreska says that she wants to encourage more locals to come by and engage with the school.
“If it’s your first time ever exploring an instrument, we’ll help you get started,” she said. “If you’ve been playing for years, and want to join an ensemble, we’ve got lots of options.”
From “Piano for Utter and Absolute Beginners” to orchestras and ensembles, the center is dedicated to engaging adults and children in music, and they’re committed to doing it for a reasonable price — Bloomingdale has a generous financial aid program.
On Sunday, September 14, the school will offer an instrument discovery day and an open house, which you can learn more about here. And early childhood classes are available four days a week this year.
Concerts to celebrate the anniversary will start this fall. To get involved, start browsing the classes and programs here:
West Side Rag will also be listing Bloomingdale’s upcoming concerts once they start, and you can see the school’s concert calendar here.
