To those of you who had longed for another bagel store in the old H&H Bagels spot on 80th and Broadway, we have some pretty depressing news.
It ain’t happening. In fact, the space appears to be slated for a Verizon store, as the New Yorker confirmed about two-thirds of the way into a longer story on its website. We’ve heard tips from readers about the Verizon store for a while now, and have a call into the company to confirm the New Yorker story. Update: a Verizon spokesman emailed: “We don’t comment on our store distribution plans. Our competition would love that information.”
We’ve been getting lots of other tips and hadn’t gotten around to publishing them. So here are some of the openings and closings we’ve heard about lately. Thanks to everyone who sent in tips and photos.
1 & 2. A Verizon Wireless outlet (the store was apparently an authorized Verizon dealer, not an official Verizon store) recently closed on 75th Street and Columbus Avenue. Meanwhile, a new Verizon is expected to open in the old H&H space on 80th and Broadway. Thanks to Brad, “anonymous” and @tovahgo for the tips.
3. A.G. Kitchen: Columbus Tavern on Columbus between 72nd and 73rd has closed to make way for A.G. Kitchen, a new restaurant helmed by Calle Ocho consulting chef Alex Garcia. “The menu, though basically American (various burgers, a wedge salad, crab cake sliders and steaks), has a definite Latin accent. There are ceviches and fish tacos,” says the Times. Here’s the menu (pdf), via Grubstreet. It opens Thursday.
4. Pippin Jewelry is close to opening on 75th and Columbus right next to the now-shuttered Verizon store. It’s one of a handful of Columbus Avenue openings that we recently wrote about. Thanks to Brad for the tip.
5. the ‘dam, a “classic American Tavern” opened in April on 110th and Amsterdam and is now offering an $18.95 bottomless brunch — “which includes choice of menu item and two hours of mimosa’s, bloody mary’s, or screw drivers.”
6. Starbucks has opened on 100th Street and Columbus Avenue. “We are just as excited as you to be here,” a sign on a blackboard at the store said. Well, that’s a little presumptuous, isn’t it? Thanks to Tohru for the tip and photo, and Paul Solomon for a previous tip.
7. Neighborhood Bar & Grill on 106th and Amsterdam appears to be closed. The bar’s phone number is no longer active. Our tipster Ben said “Loved the place — sad to see it’s probably gone”
8. SheShe Pizzeria should open in September at 961 Columbus, around 107th Street, says David Chkeidze at Massey Knackal.
