It’s a not-so-secret secret among theater and opera fans: there are lots of inexpensive tickets available to see some great performances at Lincoln Center. In fact, it can be just about as cheap to catch a show at the Metropolitan Opera as it is to see a movie at the Loews Cinemas just four blocks away, if you include the cost of popcorn and a soda.
The cheapest seats at the opera are now $25, but in the upcoming season, there will be 140 seats available for a mere $20 each, and a total of 451 seats priced at or below $25, up from 354, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Lincoln Center will also be increasing the cost of the best seats and season tickets, and expects the whole experiment to bring in 1% to 1.5% more revenue.
Savvy Upper West Siders also know that there are also lots of free performances at Juilliard (almost daily during the school year), the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, and at the David Rubenstein Atrium (every Thursday). You can also get day-of discount tickets to some Lincoln Center performances at the Rubenstein Atrium Tuesday through Sunday.
If this all seems like a lot to keep up with, we list most of the free and inexpensive events at Lincoln Center in our weekly calendar.
