An underground electrical cable failed in the wee hours of Wednesday morning, sending smoke pouring out of a manhole at 86th Street between Columbus and Amsterdam. There were three fire trucks on the scene after it was called in around 4 a.m., and “lots of smoke and loud bangs,” according to Sara Lind, who lives nearby.
“We received a call of a smoking manhole from the FDNY. There were/are no outages connected with it. We have personnel on the scene making repairs,” a Con Ed spokesman told us.
Crews were still working on the issue as of Wednesday around 10:30.
