Twice a year, the sun rises precisely between the towers of the El Dorado as seen from my living room window. The El Dorado is located at 300 Central Park West, between 90th and 91st streets. I took the photo from the top floor of my building, which is located on the same block, at Columbus Avenue. The sun rose today, November 28, 2023, at 7:07 a.m., and will continue its southward track until December 21st, which marks the shortest day of the year, known as the winter solstice. It will then reverse and reappear between the towers in a few weeks, as it has since time immemorial (even before the construction of the El Dorado).

Fantastic photo.
Wow! Thx for sharing.
Great photo, Jeff. So, do you take it every year at the same time? Or does that eventually wear thin. Come to think of it, how could seeing that ever wear thin? Whether you capture it on film or not.
Thank you, Jim. Haven’t done this in a while. However, this morning, my internal alarm woke me up in time to grab this and a few other shots, too. If you’re inerested, check out my facebook page: Jefffrenchsegall
Love it!
That’s a beautiful photo, Mr. Jeff, and your closing line is worthy of repetition: “It will then reverse and reappear between the towers in a few weeks, as it has since time immemorial (even before the construction of the El Dorado).”
Beautiful photo and worth knowing. Thank you. This probably will not be in newspaper ——maybe local tv news. Thanks. It is west side info.
Lovely photo. Thank you.
A beautiful photo and lovely description.
Nice shot!
Gorgeous on this cold day! All of us with northern facing windows or balconies and buildings or balconies to the east of us know this as truly the dark time of year when the sun will not angle in even on the brightest day. Not til early one day in late January, a sliver of dawn sunshine will cross those northern sills and ledges – happy day. A few weeks after that, I bet the sun starts coming up north of the Northern El Dorado tower, no? A great UWS seasonal indicator.
Lovely photo! Iconic NYC/UWS. Thank you I didn’t know this happens 2x a year!!
Beautiful! Thanks!
When does it reappear?
Hi, Cori. The next reverse ‘henge will be Thursday, January 11, about 7:20am. Look west to east.
Fine photo, nice name! This is a lovely view of one of the “reverse Manhattanhenges” (began at 6:59am) [coinage by Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson] that occurs in November and January, on both sides of the winter solstice. You have to look west to east, usually on a major cross-street, to see the sun rise on the grid. It aligns because of Manhattan’s unique 27.5-degree skew to the northeast. The summer ‘henges are in May and June, sunset, looking east to west. Next reverse ‘henge will be Thursday, January 11, abouy 7:20am, I think.
