Two fires were reported on the Upper West Side early Thursday morning, though no one has been reported injured.
One on the fourth floor of a brownstone at 143 West 80th Street near Columbus Avenue was called in at 5:09 a.m. and was under control as of 5:39 a.m., according to FDNY. No injuries were reported.
Another fire was called in at 6:55 a.m. at 250 West 106th Street, a building that houses exercise studio Bodystrength Fitness, which is listed by Google as being permanently closed. It went to a second alarm at 7:08 a.m., and a total of 106 firefighters were called to the scene. No one was reported injured.
Thankful no injuries! FDNY is the BEST. Dearly hoping that the 106th corner is not a harbinger of a huge towering thing-to-be.
That is my fear too. The building owner has not had a ground floor tenant since that last restaurant MACCHINA closed a year ago.
With COVID, he has no revenue from the gym either.
So, he will likely file a fire insurance claim and will likely get the $4, but is not bound to restore the existing building, he can simply sell it to developers.
106th street … 106 FireFifghters …fortunately nobody got injured thanks to all 106 and also to those who were called to 80th street.
My friends/neighbors lost one cat while the other is fighting for its life.

Please help
Bob,
Did you know that your friends who lost their cat were the ones who caused the fire? They are the reason 16 people don’t have a home to go to tonight. I am one of those people. The idea of a gofundme page for a cat seems a little insensitive right now, don’t you think?
Bob,
Can you back that up with details?
Do you mean @ Ashley? Bc that’s a big time heavy public shaming/accusation! What did the FDNY rule to be the cause?
fire started on 4th floor

…how did it happen?

Any cause for fire in Bodystrength?! That was my gym for over 30 years! Tragic.
I’m devastated about the gym. I missed it so much already.
Any news on the fire on 67th between Broadway and Amsterdam at 8:20 am on Dec 7th? Was under control very quickly – on the second floor of the building that housed Old Johns diner – in fact more or less above the diner at 148 West 67th. Huge siren noise – “all hands” alert and then all quiet in what seemed like 20 minutes. Video if the aftermath here:

Not sure if fire was related to construction in any of the several shuttered street level businesses.
Sad about the 67th St fire. Old John’s just closed for good a few weeks ago. Connected events?
