A 70-year-old woman was hit in the head with a block of wood Saturday night on West 79th Street and Broadway, Deputy Inspector Timothy Malin told WSR. Larissa Williams, a homeless woman who spends time in the area was arrested for throwing the wood, Malin said. The victim was taken to the hospital; she had a cut on her head, which didn’t require stitches.
Williams was intoxicated at the time of the incident and involved in an altercation with a companion who is also homeless, according to Malin. Police say she took the wood from a nearby newsstand.
“As soon as the assault happened, every cop in the precinct was made aware of it, and her picture was immediately shared to all of our Department smartphones.” Malin said. “Within three hours, she was spotted by some of our plainclothed cops and arrested.” She was charged with felony assault, “because of the age of the victim and the fact that a weapon was involved,” Malin explained. He also said he spoke to the D.A.’s office and expects prosecutors will request bail.
