Greek restaurant Elea just opened at 217 West 85th Street, near Broadway. “The ground floor has a central bar and seats all around, with a fairly intimate 40-seat dining room off to one side. It’s just the beginning, since downstairs, the spacious main dining room can accommodate 130 people with an appetite not just for seafood, as at Kyma, but also for what the director of operations, Joe Ragonese, describes as ‘more traditional, Greek home cooking,'” the Times reported. Elea means “olives” in Greek. Eater has more photos and info here and here’s the menu. Thanks to Beverly for the heads up. She wrote “there’s a lamb youvetsi on the menu that’s calling my name.”

The original location is on Amsterdam and 84th.
Mezzogiorno just closed at 2791 Broadway between 107th and 108th, ending a 31-year run, first in Soho and then on the UWS. Lorenzo and Nicola called the run “a grand adventure in this greatest of cities.” FUMO is expected to replace Mezzogiorno. We wrote about it here.

I’m so sad to see Mezzogiorno has closed. I had been to their Soho location many times over the years but ate at the Broadway location about 2x a month since they opened. The food was always fresh and fabulous and very reasonably priced. We have taken dozens of friends and family members there and everyone raved about the food.I will miss the delicious spaghetti with veal, zucchini and sage!
How about the opening of the 86th Street subway station? And how long before it too floods?
It doesn’t look like it’ll be ready within two weeks.
I spoke to an MTA worker and they said this coming week.
I remember them down in SoHo 25 years ago. Fabulous pasta. Sorry to see them gom
Elea has opened on 85th Street and that’s good for the neighborhood. But, sadly, that location is cursed. The previous tenant, Prime KO, was an Asian inspired expensive upscale Kosher Steakhouse only frequented by wealthy trendy young Orthodox Jewish Wall Street type folks and didn’t survive. In fact, it died a really bad death! Do you think that an expensive upscale Greek seafood restaurant can make it in that space? Only if they sell tons of booze! Will young hip rich folks go there? No. It’s not in a cool area of town. I hope I’m wrong. They spent a lot of money gutting and remodeling this space. I give them a year. This is just my opinion and I know it will offend some people so I do apologize in advance to my fellow wealthy liberal rent stabilized Democratic voters. See you on Election Day or when you’re walking your dogs at 10PM on a weeknight!
