A kitten escaped from a cat-adoption site in front of Barnes & Noble at 82nd and Broadway on Sunday afternoon. The kitten then ran into the Broadway median and climbed a tree. A firefighter scrambled up after it and pulled it back to safety. See, the Upper West Side is a small town! Thanks to Tom Swenson for the photo and story.
July 30, 2018 Weather: Partly cloudy, with a high of 81 degrees.
Notices:
Several free concerts and more local events this week are on our calendar.
A senior men’s discussion group is open to new members. “We meet every Tuesday from 12:10 PM to 1:10 PM at Council House on West 72nd Street between Broadway and West End Avenue and discuss events, situations, concerns and other factors that affect our lives today. Also, we revisit our past as it affects our lives today. If you continue with us Council requests an annual fee of $72. All discussions are confidential and meetings are casual.”
News:
A group of Upper West Side moms connected by the UWS Mommas Facebook group helped a woman from North Carolina who unexpectedly delivered her baby at Mt. Sinai West several months early and needed a place to stay. “Jenna, who lives near the hospital and owns a second apartment in her building that she is trying to sell, immediately offered it to Holbert and Wallace…Upper West Side mom Toby Baldinger read the appeal and wanted to make sure the new parents had a hot meal every night without having to think about dinner. She gave her credit card to a nearby diner and told them to deliver the day’s special to the apartment every day for two weeks. Other moms started delivering home-cooked food, and one is even baking treats for the NICU nurses. Even more women donated gift cards and clothing suitable for a nursing mom.”
Speaking of ethics…Beacon Bar held an ethics salon for moms. “Next dilemma: Your best friend is committed to giving her daughter a sugar-free childhood. You spy her husband and child sidling up to Mister Softee. The husband begs you not to say anything. What do you do?”
Council Member Helen Rosenthal is sponsoring a bill to ban city businesses from offering plastic straws, because of the environmental damage they cause. Columbia Dining has announced it will be transitioning to paper straws and compostable cups.
The Upper West Side accounted for a large share of donations to rising star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the Democratic Socialist from the Bronx who defeated Joe Crowley in a recent Democratic congressional primary.
The socialist who reaped the benefits of capitalism… Boy that is interesting…
she’s not a socialist, she’s an old school FDR democrat far as I can tell
For all YOU know, her UWS donors are ALSO democratic Socialists . . .
Good Point Eric , , , if anyone wants to see what Democratic Socialism can achieve, study the current economic, social, and government situation in Venezuela.
Scandinavian countries would provide a better model.
Get ready to pay up if you want the US to be like those Scandinavian countries that are actually not socialist. Capitalism with heavy taxation they do have.
See, for ex https://fee.org/articles/the-myth-of-scandinavian-socialism/
Read some more.
Those countries’ citizens pay taxes and get Education Health, Old Age supports, you know, a good life.
We pay taxes to benefit The Rich, The Military, you know, inequality and destruction.
Guess I can see what you want here.
Socialism, higher taxes and the nanny state are not the solution to the current nightmare. If the pendulum shifts to the extreme left in 2018, we will likely end up with a Trump second term. We need a middle ground, and common sense.
“nanny state”…Wow!
Start here in this Socialist media (NY hah!):

Amazing UWS Moms deserve a Birthing Center.
So do their babies.
And fathers.
And visiting mothers, and babies, and fathers, and…

“The socialist who reaped the benefits of capitalism… ”
I’m not sure how getting small donations from people on the UWS is “reaping the benefits of capitalism”, unless you consider any money transaction to be a capitalist benefit.
It’s more interesting how many pro-capitalists “reap the benefits” of socialism. We have many socialist programs and institutions in the US, especially in NYC. Have you ever benefited from CUNY, or the public hospital system, or the FDNY and EMT? How about the MTA? i know it is suffering right now, but a privatized MTA wouldn’t exist.
And then there’s Medicare, and Medicaid, and Social Security, and Unemployment Insurance… all socialism, or at the very least social democratic programs.
Interesting point, but a little short on facts.
Probably NONE of these socially-progressive entities were created under the imprimatur of “Socialism”…in fact, the quickest way to kill ANY such program in this country would be to label it “Socialist”, a ploy that opponents of Social Security, Medicare, and “ObamaCare” did try.
Sadly, this new adoration of “Socialism” is coming, in large part, by the under-40 “Disrupters” (like the the Sanders-Stein crowd whose 3rd-party votes or refusal to vote helped create 2016’s disaster-of-an-election). Many of them hate the status-quo and, convinced that “Capitalism” is to blame for what they see as society’s ills, are mesmerized by the bright-shiny-toy of ABC (AnythingButCapitalism).
And let’s not leave out the pathetic ones who don’t know the difference between Socialism and Social Media.
And about “like the the Sanders-Stein crowd whose 3rd-party votes or refusal to vote helped create 2016’s disaster-of-an-election”
What!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!If a few thousand votes here and there can cause a fringe party to be press-ganged into the role of spoiler, then perhaps our democracy isn’t so sturdy after all. But the Democratic leadership would rather blame this tiny voting minority, just as they would rather fecklessly tack to the center, chasing mythical Republican swing votes, than work to expand an electorate already beleaguered by voter ID laws and the neglect of their representatives. Instead of asking why some people are so disillusioned that they would throw away their vote for a Massachusetts doctor who has never achieved political office—an act of political despair that reflects our nation’s dire socio-economic condition—they would rather resent the voters themselves.

Wow! Start with “Interesting point, but a little short on facts.” and then continue with a TOTALLY FACT-FREE COMMENT. Facts start here:

I’d be willing to try Capitalism.
Am I alone here?
My point was more around the fact she claims she is ‘a girl from the Bronx’ however spent majority of her life in Westchester.
Similar talking points as Warren and her Native American ‘roots’….
Also, the current mayor’s real last name…
Society finally woke up and realized these phony left leaning frauds give their song and dance during election season on how they will help and post election it’s “see you in four years!!”
But Eric, THIS IS TRUE
she is ‘a girl from the Bronx’ and ended up attending public school in Yorktown, 40 minutes north of her birthplace. As a result, much of her early life was spent in transit between her tight-knit extended family in the Bronx & her daily student life.
I too was born in The Bronx and thus ‘a man from the Bronx’.
Keep bending it as far as you can….just don’t let it break…right?
Perception is reality in politics and in life.
Now to dcontinue with your Bending the Truth:

EXCEPT For one thing, “Trump” is not his real name. The Donald’s grandfather was a German immigrant named Frederick Drumpf. At some point, he started calling himself “Frederick Trump,” but it is unclear if he ever changed his name officially.
AND
Trump keeps saying his father was born in Germany – he wasn’t
BENDING, LIEING…what next?
I wish Helen Rosenthal would do 2 minutes of research before jumping on the cause du jour.

wow. thank you for these-
Silver Moon finally found paper straws at a new supplier, and we are now using them. Hurrah for paper!
Poor trees.
It’s nice to ban plastic straws, what about plastic cups they are bigger and worse. Helen Rosenthal, get cracking on that.
Plastic cups can be recycled. Straws cannot. Something having to do with their size and the recycling equipment.
Amazing how Helen Rosenthal never actually does anything useful.
She’s a politician. None of them seem to be interested in working on real issues that are useful to the majority of the populace.
Except Trump, but he’s not really a politician.
True, twitler is doing useful things. The problem is that the things he does are useful to Vladimir Putin, not Americans. Also links to articles from climate change skeptics like Reason? Might as well post PR from some plastic manufacturer.
