Moving trucks showed up at the Collegiate School on 78th Street and West End Avenue on Friday, and hauled items to the school’s new location. It’s the first time the all-boys private school has moved since 1892.
The school, which had been on winter break, opened at its new location at 301 Freedom Place South between 61st and 62nd Streets on Friday.
Collegiate’s building will be turned into a new 18-story residence.
The new building is nine stories and has several amenities. “An increase of over 43,000 square feet from our current location, the building will include state-of-the-art classrooms and science facilities, a regulation-size gym perfect for Friday night basketball games and all-school gatherings, a large courtyard, a 306-seat theater, a black box theater, gallery space for art exhibitions, and ample common spaces for informal student and teacher gatherings,” a school website says.

Tuition for kindergarten through 12th grade will only set you back $49,800 per year.
Thank goodness the expanded 529 plan will allow our very best families to *save* more for their children’s education.
Sure wish their deal for that new space had actually resulted in the prime UWS affordable housing it was intended to. They got everything and the community lost.
Might take that up with the Church who owned the land beneath the school on 77th. THEY told the school to vacate.
schools are good. especially good schools.
How did the community lose by providing students with the best possible school?
Luxury condos are affordable housing on the UWS.
Imagine it’s sort of an even exchange as only people who could afford Collegiate tuition will be living in the new condos.
Our boy went to Collegiate on a scholarship in the 80s and he has done very well. Collegiate was a great school for him, though his mother and I wish he had gone to a coed school. An all-boys school is a tough environment.
Another hi-rise to add to UWS congestion! Wonderful news.
What’s going to happen to the ild WE space?
If only every school could have this in every part of every boro.
We can only dream.
The entrance to the school is actually on West 78 Street between West End and Broadway, while the entrance to the church is on West 77 Street.
Thanks, fixed.
