The Upper West Side is getting new kids’ clothes, bagels, and more. But a beloved local store is closing at the end of the month after 49 years.
A new kids’ clothing store called Monica and Andy is opening at 410 Columbus Avenue near 79th Street, the former hime of Alexis Bittar. Monica & Andy is hiring, and you can contact them at careers@monicaandandy.com.
Columbus Bagel Cafe opened this week at 472 Columbus Avenue between 82nd and 83rd Streets. It’s got the same ownership as Jumbo Bagels in midtown, said Moe, the manager. As of next week, they plan to be open 24 hours a day seven days a week, one of just a handful of round-the-clock restaurants in the neighborhood. The shop sells bagels, sandwiches and salads and is the third new bagel store to open in the neighborhood in the past six months. Thanks to Lisa Kampf Lopez for the photo and tip.
Liberty House a clothing, jewelry, and gift shop at 112th and Broadway, is getting ready to close at the end of the month after 49 years, as we first reported a few months ago. “Shop through April 27 for the last chance to have a Liberty House keepsake from their well-curated collection of African masks and mudcloths, Afghanistani spice boxes, Swat Valley furniture, Japanese cast iron objects, plus gift items and textiles.”
As Suzanne Creamer wrote to us: “This is a beloved store; customers are bringing in baked goods and chocolate like there’s been a death in the family…Liberty House is a clothing and jewelry boutique that has always featured local artists, some of whose art work hangs in the store as well as art to wear, hand-made fine jewelry, Swat Valley hand-painted furniture, African masks, and a stunning collection of painted Afghanistan spice boxes, all on sale now. Sadness and celebration all at the same time, until April 27th.”
D is for Doggy, a dog daycare business, is coming soon to the former home of Amsterdam Flooring on 87th and Amsterdam. Thanks to Kevin for the photo.
Savor Beauty and Spa is opening at 488 Columbus Avenue at 81st Street on April 22. They describe themselves as “organic skincare meets Korean beauty rituals in a NY minute.” Angela Jia Kim, a concert pianist, founded the company in 2007 after “she broke out from a natural lotion before a performance. She originally created organic anti-aging creams in her Manhattan kitchen for herself, her mom and sisters.” On opening day you can bring in a full bottle of “non-natural” skin care product and get a Savor Beauty equivalent product for 25% off.
Acuity NYC, the optometric practice of Dr. Viola Kanevsky, currently located at 527 Columbus Avenue between 85th and 86th, will be moving around May 1 to 65 Central Park West, between 66th and 67th Streets.
Bummed about Liberty House!
Did you announce Bed, Bath, and Beyond at 90/Broadway?
Can Columbus Bagel Cafe claim they have been in business for over 30 years if they are just now having a grand opening?
I think so, if it’s a new location.
Similar to the way that each of the numerous Ray’s Pizza locations billed itself as “The Original”? As a child, I used to wonder which was the actual original.
Oh, My Pie pizzeria is now open at 166 W. 72nd Street.
Yes, glad you mentioned newly opened My Pie Pizzeria. It’s really a nice place with excellent and great tasting Italian pizzas. And they have 4 types of pizzas that are not made with tomato sauce, but just slices of fresh tomatoes.
And the people that serve there are lovely and welcoming. The ambiance is so pleasant.
At Broadway and 111th, next to the Heights, a sign has gone up for a place called “The Shaking Crab.” Appears to be a small, cajun seafood chain with a location in Flushing.
Just wondering if they’ll use the slogan:
EAT HERE; GET CRABS !
😱👻
Thanks, Kevin, for that local info! I had not seen this and am excited about this development.
Now if they can just get moving on the repairs to that Citibank building on that block!
Any info on the old Food Emporium building on Broadway between 89th and 90th? Looks like something is in the works.
Harmon store which is a subsidiary of Bed Bath & Beyond
Any word on what happened to joes on 83rd/Amsterdam?
JOE’s on 83rd and Amsterdam closed abruptly Easter Sunday and am surprised West Side Rag hasn’t reported. It was announced the same day on their Instagram profile (which is now deleted) and I walked by this evening to confirm. Sad. It had the best burger in town and was much better than the Irish bar it had replaced.
Their YELP page shows the closed sign…

Something is very fishy about Joe’s closing so quickly. Signs on door indicated they were selling off inventory/stock/furnishings (Tag sale)with things needing to be out ASAP.
Sounds like either one of several things but rent or taxes (back owed) come to mind.
I love D is for Doggy! We used to go to the Chelsea location when we lived downtown. They were so sweet to our pup. Super excited they’re opening on the UWS!
The Liberty House closing sux. One point of clarification though is that they hadn’t had a store at 112th St for 49 years; that particular store opened something like 15-20 years ago. There was a sporting goods/athletic shoe store at that spot in the mid 1990s.
BTW: The Felix & Fanny shop has opened a half block south, where the Spec Shop optical shop used to be located. It’s some sort of clothing store, garish stuff that looks like it’s targeted at young women.
Oh also, the ma la xiang guo Chinese restaurant has opened at Broadway and 108th. I still can’t figure out what the heck the name of the place is. “108 Food”, “Dried Hotpot”, something else?
Anyone have any info on T&R pizza between 79th and 80th?
