Artist Hilary McCarthy has a show up at the Wild Bird Fund Gallery (565 Columbus Avenue between 87th and 88th Streets) that was inspired by her volunteer work at the Wild Bird Fund.
“The paintings were inspired by my recent volunteer work at the Wild Bird Fund where I took care of a sick swan there named Vanessa. The paintings developed as an emotional response I had to the recent plan of the Department of Environmental Conservations plan to eradicate virtually all 2,200 of New York state’s mute swans.”
There’s an opening reception this Friday, May 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the gallery. She says 50% of all sales will benefit the Wild Bird Fund. The show, entitled “Songs of he Mute Swan,” will be up through June 11.
Beautiful paintings; they are really lovely. And the Wild Bird Fund is an amazing place doing wonderful work. They can always use volunteers (and support). I was amazed when I first found them in our neighborhood and got my first up close peek at a swan, and at other beautiful birds I have only seen from afar. If you are a bird lover, you should definitely check them out.
I saw these in the window and they are indeed gorgeous! Kudos to the artist.
Why in hell is the DCE planning to eradicate mute swans?
Excellent question. I would like to know too.
