Upper West Side News

An Upper West Side school with a large influx of migrant students hosted a Thanksgiving feast for members of its community, as first reported by Gothamist.
P.S. 145 Bloomingdale School on West 105th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, has had around 160 students who live in shelters enroll since 2022, which coincides with the beginning of the surge of migrants into the city.
Last Monday, the school hosted a holiday meal for the kids, parents, and staff.
“We make sure to have your traditional meal for Thanksgiving, but then we also have some Dominican food, and we have Russian food, just to really make sure that all of the families feel a little touch of home, especially for those who are newly arrived to our school community,” Natalia Garcia, the school’s principal, told Gothamist.
The Department of Education does not track immigration status, but the agency confirmed to Gothamist that 48,000 children in temporary housing have enrolled in New York City public schools for the first time in the last two years.
P.S. 145 offers both Russian and Spanish dual language programs.

New reporting from this weekend states that Democrats in the House of Representatives are debating a push for younger leadership in key Congressional positions due to worries surrounding the age of current leaders, including Upper West Side Rep. Jerry Nadler.
According to the New York Times, dozens of Democrats, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi, are privately pushing Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin to challenge Nadler for his position at the top of the Judiciary Committee.
“They are doing so out of concern that Mr. Nadler will be ineffective in pushing back against any efforts by Mr. Trump to abuse his powers,” the Times reported.
Nadler did not respond to the New York Times request for comment, but he previously wrote the following in a letter to colleagues announcing his re-election run for the committee post.
“As a New Yorker I have stood up to Donald Trump my entire career. When he became president, I led the Judiciary Committee’s efforts to hold him accountable for his various abuses of power, culminating in two historic impeachments.”
Raskin has not decided if he will challenge Nadler for the position, sources told the Times.

Someone broke into an Upper West Side apartment this weekend and stole a safe that held nearly $400,000 in valuables, as first reported by the New York Post.
The burglar smashed through a door to the apartment around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday at 75 West End Avenue, near West 63rd Street, and fled with a safe that had $220,000 in cash and $160,000 in baubles, the Post reported.
The publication added that a friend of the tenant had been staying in the apartment for around a month, but was out at the time of the break-in.
It is unclear how the person got into the Upper West Side building in the first place.
The burglar also took $7,000 worth of Louis Vuitton sneakers, the Post added.
There have been no arrests as of Sunday evening and the investigation remains ongoing.

A water main burst the day before Thanksgiving on the Upper West Side, leaving multiple buildings without running water for an extended period of time.
The water main section burst around 1:40 p.m. on November 27 at Central Park West and 102nd Street. The rupture resulted in water flowing onto the surrounding street and into the 103rd Street subway station, causing significant delays for the A, B, C, and D lines.
You can click, HERE, to see a video of the water flowing into the UWS station.
Water was also shut off for multiple hours at eight buildings near West 103 Street and Central Park West.
Rohit Aggarwala, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, told reporters that the rupture didn’t have to do with any ongoing construction, but instead the age of the broken water main section.
The specific piece of equipment was installed in 1951.
“The reality is that in a system as large as ours, these things do happen,” he said to PIX11. “It’s a huge inconvenience, we understand that, especially the night before a holiday.”

I am no detective, but the burglar knew there was a safe with valuables and that there were expensive sneakers in the apartment. Someone who either worked in that building or worked for the owner of the apartment tipped off the thief.
Nadler couldn’t even deal with the helicopters. NYC needs new leadership at the federal, state and local level that doesn’t include Democrats. They sold us out long ago.
