Upper West Side News
By Gus Saltonstall
An Upper West Side school with a large influx of migrant students hosted a Thanksgiving feast for members of its community, as first reported by Gothamist.
P.S. 145 Bloomingdale School on West 105th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, has had around 160 students who live in shelters enroll since 2022, which coincides with the beginning of the surge of migrants into the city.
Last Monday, the school hosted a holiday meal for the kids, parents, and staff.
“We make sure to have your traditional meal for Thanksgiving, but then we also have some Dominican food, and we have Russian food, just to really make sure that all of the families feel a little touch of home, especially for those who are newly arrived to our school community,” Natalia Garcia, the school’s principal, told Gothamist.
The Department of Education does not track immigration status, but the agency confirmed to Gothamist that 48,000 children in temporary housing have enrolled in New York City public schools for the first time in the last two years.
P.S. 145 offers both Russian and Spanish dual language programs.

New reporting from this weekend states that Democrats in the House of Representatives are debating a push for younger leadership in key Congressional positions due to worries surrounding the age of current leaders, including Upper West Side Rep. Jerry Nadler.
According to the New York Times, dozens of Democrats, including Rep. Nancy Pelosi, are privately pushing Maryland Rep. Jamie Raskin to challenge Nadler for his position at the top of the Judiciary Committee.
“They are doing so out of concern that Mr. Nadler will be ineffective in pushing back against any efforts by Mr. Trump to abuse his powers,” the Times reported.
Nadler did not respond to the New York Times request for comment, but he previously wrote the following in a letter to colleagues announcing his re-election run for the committee post.
“As a New Yorker I have stood up to Donald Trump my entire career. When he became president, I led the Judiciary Committee’s efforts to hold him accountable for his various abuses of power, culminating in two historic impeachments.”
Raskin has not decided if he will challenge Nadler for the position, sources told the Times.

Someone broke into an Upper West Side apartment this weekend and stole a safe that held nearly $400,000 in valuables, as first reported by the New York Post.
The burglar smashed through a door to the apartment around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday at 75 West End Avenue, near West 63rd Street, and fled with a safe that had $220,000 in cash and $160,000 in baubles, the Post reported.
The publication added that a friend of the tenant had been staying in the apartment for around a month, but was out at the time of the break-in.
It is unclear how the person got into the Upper West Side building in the first place.
The burglar also took $7,000 worth of Louis Vuitton sneakers, the Post added.
There have been no arrests as of Sunday evening and the investigation remains ongoing.

A water main burst the day before Thanksgiving on the Upper West Side, leaving multiple buildings without running water for an extended period of time.
The water main section burst around 1:40 p.m. on November 27 at Central Park West and 102nd Street. The rupture resulted in water flowing onto the surrounding street and into the 103rd Street subway station, causing significant delays for the A, B, C, and D lines.
You can click, HERE, to see a video of the water flowing into the UWS station.
Water was also shut off for multiple hours at eight buildings near West 103 Street and Central Park West.
Rohit Aggarwala, the commissioner of the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, told reporters that the rupture didn’t have to do with any ongoing construction, but instead the age of the broken water main section.
The specific piece of equipment was installed in 1951.
“The reality is that in a system as large as ours, these things do happen,” he said to PIX11. “It’s a huge inconvenience, we understand that, especially the night before a holiday.”

I am no detective, but the burglar knew there was a safe with valuables and that there were expensive sneakers in the apartment. Someone who either worked in that building or worked for the owner of the apartment tipped off the thief.
Very relatable – who among us doesn’t have $220k in cash and $160k in baubles lying around in a safe?
Yup. I surely seems like an “inside job”.
Or who was a friend of the “friend” staying over.
Nadler couldn’t even deal with the helicopters. NYC needs new leadership at the federal, state and local level that doesn’t include Democrats. They sold us out long ago.
Yeah. We need more delusional people telling us about how pets are being eaten in Springfield, Ohio. We need anti-vax conspiracy theorists peddling misinformation (and worse) at HHS; we need another conspiracy theorist with no relevant experience (and close ties to the Kremlin) to be our National Security Advisor and we need a Fox News personality with zero administrative experience running the Defense Department, one of the largest and most complex organizations on Earth.
Still clinging to the disproven Russian collusion conspiracy theory?
Disproven?! Hardly.
But no one’s above the law, right?
Weeell, actually, Michael, courtesy of the SCOTUS’s 2024 ruling (6-3, coincidentally) in the case of Donald J. Trump v. United States, U.S. presidents enjoy absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for all “official acts”, ahem, committed while in office. Great work if you can get it! No wonder DJ was so eager to return to that shabby, 2nd-rate Oval Office. Fortunately for us, Biden is a fairly nice guy and confines himself to acts such pardoning his own son from unjust and excessive Republican persecution, an act perfectly legal even without the aforementioned SCOTUS ruling. As for Donald … let’s just try to bear in mind all the “official acts” that might conceivable be taken while strolling down Fifth Avenue and find what comfort we can from their newfound legality. Interesting times await us.
I wonder what Nadler thinks about President Biden pardoning his son, Hunter. What happened to “no one is above the law”?
He was prosecuted for crimes almost no one is prosecuted for (he had paid the taxes, as well as interest and penalties), and had accepted a plea deal. When even the plea agreement was taken away, President Biden did exactly the right thing.
Maybe Biden should have made Hunter Ambassador to France as Trump did for Jared Kushner’s father after granting him a pardon from prison and topping it off with an appointment to Ambassador to France. I didn’t hear any MAGA complaining about that.
You do realize this pardon completely negates the Left’s sanctimonious claims that “no one is above the law”, which they repeated with glee following Trump’s conviction.
You do realize that “no one is above the law” largely is a reference to SCOTUS’ ruling which greatly expanded the universe of actions for which Trump, as President, has immunity. One of the many incredibly damaging rulings handed down by the Court in recent years.
Would it be more accurate to say that in America “no one is above the law” now has a single exception, or that thanks to the “Donald J. Trump v. United States” ruling the law has extended a long, slender tendril of legality to cover the POTUS in certain cases? This may correspond to asking whether the glass is half-empty or half-full.
That phrase has nothing to do with the SCOTUS decision, a decision which will protect Joe Biden as well.
Jared Kushner’s father already served his sentence and home confinement after a stay in jail. His pardon came long after he fulfilled his legal obligations. It doesn’t even come close to the pardon that Hunter received for his convictions. But keep making excuses for the Biden family being corrupt.
A. There’s zero evidence of the Bidens being corrupt. Not that the GQP didn’t look long and hard.
B. By any reasonable measure, Kushner’s crimes were far more substantial than Hunter’s.
C . If Kushner’s pardon is so meaningless (compared to Hunter) because he served his sentence, etc., why did he want it? Why did he accept it?
D. The real comparison is not Hunter with Kushner, it is Hunter with Trump.
1. Trump falsified business records in NY;
2. He took and improperly stored government documents he was not entitled to and then repeatedly lied about it;
3. He illegally sought to interfere with GA’s 2020 election count (asking the Secy of State to “find him” 11,000 plus votes); and
4. He arguably incited insurrection and leaned on Pence to obstruct the process of certifying the 2020 election based on 100% bogus claims of election fraud.
That’s hardly a complete list of Trump’s corrupt actions. When it comes to criminality, Trump is a master professional. Hunter Biden is a formerly drug addled, amateur.
If the Bidens are corrupt, why were Republican investigators unable to find even a shred of evident supporting this after years of investigation? And the pardons for Paul Manafort, Roger Stone, and Steve Bannon? There’s no corruption in the crimes they committed and were forgiven for?
In a perfect world, I’d wish he didn’t pardon Hunter. But I completely understand why a father wouldn’t want to leave his son’s future subject to the capriciousness of a corrupt DoJ that is coming.
Exactly.
So if my friend’s doing it, I should be allowed to do it, too?
Actually I think we’ve come to that point in this country. We are all looking like law abiding suckers while Trump and his cast of crooks get re-elected. Hunter Biden’s tax misdeeds are not top of my worry list
Michael, nobody but republicans cares about Hunter Biden. It was a political hit job and father is showing mercy to his son.
As a former Democrat (now Independent), I care about Hunter Biden.
Jay, apparently Bret Stephens and the NYT also care, so I guess people do care about nepotism and lying even when its from their side! I find it encouraging that some people are willing to call out the truth no matter which side its on. Perhaps you don’t!
I don’t think Bret Stephens is on the Democrat’s side.
This pardon is going to haunt Dems in the 2026 midterms. I guarantee it.
I wish I had a safe with $400,000 in valuables 🙂
And a big portion of those, “baubles”! To say nothing of bangles and beads.
In regards to Nadler. If the Democrats are worried about cognitive decline, they should say so, because otherwise, I do not understand why they would think that someone younger would inherently do a better job at pushing back against Trump overreach. It would seem that someone with years of experience doing just that would be the right person for the job. Especially. You know. People who pushed back successfully last time Trump was president.
Also. Very happy about Thanksgiving for the kids. .
Hopefully we can stop canonizing Joe Biden for his moral high ground. Maybe Trump is just more honest? Two sides of the same coin.
So Joe should sacrifice his only son to a political hit job to maintain the ‘moral high ground’ – a lot of good the moral high ground has done then Dems when swing voters are willing to overlook the corruption of the Trump administration.
Why do you think Hunter Biden is above the law? He clearly committed serious crimes, was prosecuted by his own father’s DoJ, and was found guilty by a jury of his peers.
I don’t think that he’s above the law but neither is he below it – he was clearly targeted for prosecution because of who his father was and I would 1000% do the same thing if I were in President Biden’s shoes.
“ I would 1000% do the same thing if I were in President Biden’s shoes”
In that case, you have zero respect for the rule of law, and zero respect for the American justice system.
This is why you should store a couple days’ worth of water in your apartment. You can use regular old (washed!) 2-liter pop bottles if you don’t want to pay for anything fancier. Just dump and refill every daylight savings weekend.
It’s long past time to put Jerry Nadler out to pasture. He’s been in Congress for over three decades and highlights that he’s fought back against DT “his whole career” when the later has been in politics for under 10! What a joke and an embarrassment!
apparently @SG is not aware of how Nadler opposed Trump’s “Television City” project in what is now Riverside South for many decades. Nadler’s description is accurate. Nadler is very careful with his words, as opposed to how Trump and the MAGA people treat language.
https://nypost.com/2019/07/27/how-trumps-television-city-started-a-decades-long-feud-between-trump-and-nadler/
Do you still think that “no one is above the law” ?
A safe isn’t good unless it’s bolted down or too heavy to carry. A lot of people get smaller ones installed in walls or floors so you can’t just walk away with it.
Nadler frequents an UWS diner where I asked him what he thought of the Ion battery
fires at 58 residential bldgs recently?
He replied “what fires”! He is completely
out of touch snd frankly looks terrible or ill
Nadler should step down. These older senior Democrats have done a great job and have my gratitude, but they are hanging on too long.. With so many other smart and talented candidates in the wings, it’s unseemly the way they just won’t let go. It’s time for somebody else to have a turn.
I’d agree. Nadler should learn from Pelosi, Biden, Ginsberg,… Don’t overstay your time. He should be grooming successors and retiring with dignity.
As someone who is in the 103 St B/C station almost daily, there were pools of water with slow drips on the downtown platform (near the front of the train, by 102 St where the leak started apparently) for months, maybe even over a year. This is something that definitely could’ve been avoided.
