Let’s Weekend!
November 1 to 4, 2024
TCS NYC Marathon: Sunday, Nov. 3, goes through all five boroughs with the finish line in Central Park near West 67th Street; starts at 8:00 a.m. and continues all day
Running the NYC Marathon is brutal, but watching it is one of the best experiences you can have in New York City. If you’ve never been, go! If you go every year, enjoy another magical Marathon Sunday! The weather’s going to be perfect and it’s free and easy to get there. What other global marquee sporting event takes place in the UWS’s backyard? The finish line is near West 67th Street in Central Park. You can watch from just south of there, along 59th Street, on East Drive in the Park, or loads of other spots throughout the five boroughs. Check out WSR’s complete UWS guide to watching the world’s biggest, loudest marathon. Meet an UWSer who’s one of the elite group of NYC marathon pacers here, and check out our guide to UWS running clubs here.
Early voting continues through this Sunday, November 3rd. There is no early voting on Monday, so if you don’t vote this weekend, plan to vote on Election Day, Tuesday, November 5. Here’s the lookup link (or type in findmypollsite.vote.nyc) to find your early voting site. Note that your early voting site may be different from your Election Day voting site. Check out WSR’s guide to early voting here and WSR’s guide to this election’s ballot proposals here.
Ainadamar: Saturday, November 2nd at 1:00 p.m.; Metropolitan Opera at Lincoln Center, tickets start at $57
An 80-minute opera is exceptional, and this one’s unique in other ways too. It’s sung in Spanish, it incorporates flamenco and rumba, and it’s choreographed by a Cirque du Soleil veteran. I saw Argentinian composer Osvaldo Golijov’s Grammy Award-winning first opera earlier this week and enjoyed this telling of the life story of poet-playwright Federico García Lorca, who was assassinated by fascist forces at the start of the Spanish Civil War for his socialist politics and homosexuality. The staging is simple yet dramatic, and the performances are what you would expect at the world-class Met. First Free Fridays at MoMA: Friday November 8, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., 11 West 53rd Street, tickets are free but must be reserved in advance
The Museum of Modern Art in west midtown offers free admission for NYC residents on the first Friday of every month, including this Friday, from 4:00 to 8:00 P.M. Advance tickets are required and can be secured here. DJs will be playing live music, beer and cocktails are available for purchase and, of course, you can enjoy the galleries, which include the stacked permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions. There will be drop-in drawing sessions, and same-day film tickets are free for NYC residents, available on-site after 4:00 P.M. The store and cafe will also be open, so you can grab a bite in Cafe 2, get drinks at The Modern or shop the MoMA Design store.
