Upper West Side News
By Gus Saltonstall
The Upper West Side’s tallest building is facing another lawsuit, as first reported by Commercial Observer.
Extell Development, the developer of the new 70-story building at 50 West 66th Street, was sued again earlier this month for unpaid legal fees from a previous court battle. The law firm Freedman Norman Friedland is suing the developer over alleged unpaid bills connected to a legal battle in 2019, when the nonprofit City Club of New York sued Extell in an attempt to stop the construction of the new building.
The court proceedings lasted through 2021, at which point Extell won the right to finish the building that now stands at nearly 800 feet.
The new lawsuit claims that Extell Development has paid just half of the $1 million it owes to Freedman Norman Friedland, and has not made a payment since February 2021.
Extell Development did not respond to a request for comment from Commercial Observer.

We previously reported on the 90-cent coffee special offered by Zabar’s during the month of October. This week, the iconic Upper West Side food market has even more sweet deals in honor of its 90th anniversary.
From October 24 to 27, Zabar’s will offer lower prices from 8 to 11 a.m. You can get a bagel with cream cheese for $1.20, a bagel with cream cheese and a coffee for $2.90, and a bagel with cream cheese and lox for $9.90, according to the New York Post.
Additionally, though not on the UWS, on October 22, in partnership with the MTA, Zabar’s will be handing out its black-and-white cookies for free to lucky commuters in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens. The collaboration is celebrating 90 years of business for Zabar’s, and 120 years of service for the MTA.
“’My father told us if you open a store within two blocks of a subway station, you become a rich store,’” [Stanley] Zabar said at a Tuesday press conference outside the Broadway location, the Post reported. “’I can tell you this is true!’”

An Upper West Side man was arrested and charged last week in connection with the death of his mother, according to authorities and multiple reports.
On Thursday, NYPD officers brought charges against Edward Asencio, 51, after a warrant was issued for his arrest on October 9. Asencio was charged with manslaughter and assault of a person 65 or older, according to police.
The charges come after police found Edward’s mother, Ana Asencio, 84, dead in her bedroom on West 93rd Street and Columbus Avenue on July 17, 2023. The mother and son lived in the apartment together, according to reporting at the time. Her death was originally not considered suspicious, but a medical examiner later deemed the incident to be a homicide.

An Upper West Side co-op building recently turned 100 years old. The celebration got a write-up in The New York Times.
The building, at 328 West 86th Street, between West End Avenue and Riverside Drive, first welcomed tenants in the second half of 1924. The current residents hosted a birthday party for their domicile earlier this month, complete with custom coasters, matches, and napkins with the building’s logo, which they designed.
“We, the residents now, pride ourselves on being regular, normal folks,” Yulia Poltorak, told the Times. A different resident, Kenneth Todd, noted that apartments in the building now go for more than $1 million.
“It’s hard to call that middle-class,” he said, “but that’s indicative of the whole neighborhood.”

I don’t go to Zabar’s as much as I used to. A bagel with cream cheese and lox for $9.90 is a deal? I would have thought the base price was somewhere around there, if not slightly lower. Oy vey.
Try Barney [take all your] Greengrass for closer to $30 (rip off)
Same with Tal Bagels, I added a tomato and onions and it put me over $30, lol.
Zabars is a mother-figure to me, having lost my own. I always feel comforted and at home there.
Try Kossar’s for $17.50……
This is dating me, but — I remember when bagel with cream cheese and lox was $3.50.
I remember when a bagel was about 15 cents-cant remember price with cream cheese
Is any of the coffee at Zabar’s Fair Trade or organic?
Love Zabar’s. Happy 90!!

its no surprise that Extell hasn’t paid past legal fees. Just by looking at all the damage they have caused to New York you can see that they aren’t reliable nor should they be trusted, yet they keep getting business?!?! #blamegaryforit
Developers such as Gary Barnett and Extell are fueling the housing crisis with their luxury developments and indifference to the affordable housing crisis.
