By Gary Martin
I’ve discovered some benefits of aging: doing what you want when you want and allowing yourself to love the things you used to hate!
Gary B. Martin is an illustrator and animator who has lived on the Upper West Side for more than three decades. His Sunday illustrations for West Side Rag chronicle life in the neighborhood, New York City, and the Universe.
Watch for Gary’s illustrations on Sundays in the Rag and see them all here. For a broader range of Gary’s work, including animations and other motion graphics, please visit www.martoons.com

haha!😄 I can identify! Love the scenes of contentment–including details like the bright yellow flowerpot! Another great dispatch from Martoonerville!👏
Did you know that the Upper West Side is a NORC (Naturally Occurring Retirement Community)? Gary Martin, you hit the nail on the head! Look out your window any evening. It’s lights out by 9 pm almost everywhere! Great cartoon — again.
hahaha!
If only there was time out for adults!
Love it! Gary, you always manage to hit the nail on the head!
You forgot to mention the spankings.
That’s us! Love it!
Hilarious, Gary! Worse yet is that some of my favorite hobbies — exercising, cleaning my apartment, putting neatly folded laundry away — were things I hated doing when I was younger. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have several pairs of shoes that need polishing.
This guy is a treasure! Every week I feel seen!
Hahaha! Good one Gary!
Beyond spot on!
Edna St. Vincent Millay:
“Was it for this I uttered prayers,
And sobbed and cursed and kicked the stairs,
That now, domestic as a plate,
I should retire at half-past eight?”
Love Martoons!
OMG!!!
SO true!!!
I feel this deeply – JOMO! (Joy of missing out)
Yep, that’s me. Thanks, Gary, for another great cartoon.
Tee hee……truer than true.
OMG HE WROTE THIS ABOUT ME!!!! Love love love this Gary
Hysterical! All true…
This is funny and clever. I have a screenshot of almost the exact same thing which I saw online back in 2022, though not as a cartoon.
Me, me, me, me
Sooooo right! What I wouldn’t give to get the sleep I got as a kid!
What a great cartoon!!! That looks just like my dad, who recently passed. He would have loved this cartoon and would have related to it!!!
Great cartoon! Love this.
Yikes. When did my life cross over into MARTOONERVILLE!? (Honestly, I think it had something to do with moving out of Hell’s Kitchen and to the Upper Westside….) What other revelations will come with next wee’s MARTOONERVILLE?
lol
Who said getting old was a bad thing. I love it for many of the sentiments expressed in this cartoon. Plus it beats the alternative.
Hilarious! I can relate 100%.
Edna St. Vincent Millay gets the prize! (Thanks Bree, for sharing!)
