Commuters who use the 66th Street-Lincoln Center 1-train subway station should notice a new shine this week.
The Upper West Side train station was among the first in New York City to receive upgrades, repairs, and a deep cleaning in 2024, as part of the MTA’s Re-NEW-vation Program.
Repairs that took place this past weekend at the station included removal of stains left by calcium deposits from the walls, sanding and staining benches on the platform, repainting ceilings, repairing wall tiling, and installing clear drains to prevent water build up during storms.
“I’m thrilled that the Lincoln Center
train subway station was selected for the MTA’s Re-NEW-vation program,” said Upper West Side State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal, in a news release. “The Lincoln Center station will be cleaner, brighter, and safer; equipped with new signs, fresh paint, and an updated HVAC system.”The MTA implemented a service outage at the station over the weekend to get the work done.
The 66th Street 1 train stop is among 13 stations throughout the five boroughs that will receive the repairs and deep cleanings during the first quarter of 2024. The work follows 63 stations that got upgrades through the program during 2023, which included 17,030 new light fixtures being installed.
None of the other 12 stations receiving renovations in the first chunk of 2024 are on the Upper West Side.
“Our subway stations across the West Side and New York are always in need of some tender loving care,” Assembly Member Linda B. Rosenthal said in a news release. “As subway ridership continues to rise, and in some cases surpass pre-pandemic levels, it is incredibly important that the MTA and the State Legislature continue to invest in projects to improve service, safety and cleanliness throughout our public transportation system.”

Damn. Looks great.
Gee, sounds like regular maintenance.. but no, let’s bring out the Senators and the Assembly Members and celebrate it as a major achievement.
So, it’s never enough?
Truly amazing what passes for a newsworthy accomplishment when the bar is so low from decades of ineptitude. Fresh off the presses! Subway station gets cleaned for the first time in years!
“Every communist – under ground!”
Agitprop slogan at the entrance of a coal mine, spruced up before Party leadership visit, in a certain EE country, mid 1970s…
And so the wheel turns…
I’m with you. This should be done regularly, on a rotating basis, so the stations don’t get so filthy to begin with.
Now do the rest of the West Side stations.
I’m glad they scrubbed the West 66th street station but this is already one of the nicest and cleanest subway stations in the city.
The MTA should devote its resources towards cleaning other stations that are far dirtier, namely West 72nd Street.
Did you read the article?
the lincoln center stop is used by many tourists. that’s why it was done first.
“The work follows 63 stations that got upgrades through the program during 2023, which included 17,030 new light fixtures being installed.”
and PLEASE do the 14th St /7th Ave, this one is really bad !
AND 103RD.
72nd street is more heavily used too as an express line station. Picking 66th street seems like a way to clean up mostly for the Lincoln Center crowd
That’s nice, except for the “out of service” downtown elevator 66th and Broadway
Many thanks to all MTA staff!
If MTA provides a hose attached to water, I’ll clean the 79th Street station floor. It’s gross!
Let’s normalize more of this happening
Wow!
And about time too! Hooray!!
what about an un-deep cleaning now and then at ALL stations?
Now do 72 and 96.
How about the 15th Street/Prospect Park Station on the F line. I moved away 16 years ago and was shocked when I visited last year. Nothing has been kept up on this station that is so used to access Prospect Park. And it is a busy place for people working in Manhattan. It is a disgrace.
Upper West Side State Senator Brad Hoylman-Sigal commends the upgraded HCAV. Can’t wait for them to turn on that air conditioning this Spring.
There is no AC. But there is an exclusive bathroom for the station attendant. Maybe the public could be allowed to use it again.
Please, please bring this team to the #1 train W. 157th St. uptown and downtown stations…they are filthy! It’s one of the busiest stations on the UWS…not as “fancy” as the 66th Lincoln Center stop or as huge as W 168th confluence of several routes near Columbia Hospital, but they ALL need a good cleaning and more frequent too!
66th Street is what I call a “tourist” station. It wasn’t even in bad shape. How about coming to a “citizen” station like 168th Street on the #1 platform. That station could use some “renew and repair” work.
I use the station everyday, Looks and smells the exact same.
