The saga of the fallen tree in Riverside Park near West 72nd Street appears to have come to an end.
On Thursday morning, the only remains of the large tree that came crashing to the ground on December 4th, was its stump.
Heavy machinery and Parks Department workers were on the scene to begin the removal process on Wednesday morning. Thanks to Jill Goldstein for the tip.
The timeline of the tree’s removal aligned with the Parks Department’s statement that the forestry staff would remove the fallen tree sometime this week.
In what felt like some poetic justice, the removal of the downed tree cleared the view for something else.
A smaller tree.

What a relief! Now I’ll be able to sleep tonight.
Why couldn’t it have been cut into fireplace logs and left for the taking. I hope the trunk was taken to a sawmill to be repurposed as lumber.
lol. New Yorkers. So rarely see downed trees and so concerned for their welfare. While we’re at it, won’t someone please think of the fallen leaves?
The DPR Forestry chips up all removed trees and trimmings. We are in the USDA quarantine zone for the Asian Longhorn Beetle, so it is important that logs and branches are not moved around the area or out of the area. Anything over 1” in diameter must be double chipped. The wood chips are all then repurposed as mulch. Forestry maintains a large mulch pile in each borough where any DPR (Dept of Parks and Rec.) crew in the borough can load up for any projects they have. The chips are used to mulch planting beds, rustic trails, or any other landscaping needs. So the wood is not wasted.
only dry wood burns well in fireplaces
Stumped!
Please plant more trees.
Ok we will. We never thought of that before.
