An unidentified man jumped in front of an oncoming train in the 96th Street and Broadway subway station on Friday at about 12:43pm. Police said he is “likely to die,” and it is being considered “a suicide.”
There was a 13-minute disruption of southbound #2 and #3 train service, while firefighters worked to remove the man’s body from the tracks.
Please, if you are thinking about harming yourself or attempting suicide, reach out to someone you trust or call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
Be safe, fellow residents.
Truly tragic
I wrote a post earlier discussing the new support number for Suicide Prevention. It is incredibly important to let people know that you can now text or call 988! You only need to remember 988.
The 988 Lifeline is a 24/7 national network of local crisis centers that provides free and confidential emotional support to people in suicidal crisis or emotional distress.
I am just emoting here. Suicide by cop, suicide by train, and other such means of ending one’s life by forcing the agency of others are objectively unjust. One does not have a morally grounded right to implicate others without their consent in ending one’s own life. I throw myself in front of a train, and the engineer then is forced to confront the fact that their train killed someone. Not just, not right. Nor is it right to pull the passengers into the event.
I think when someone reaches that stage, they are so lost that they cannot consider other people’s feelings.
