The Audubon Society is holding its annual bird count in Riverside Park on Sunday and the community is encouraged to participate.
“The data collected by observers over the past century allow researchers, conservation biologists, and other interested individuals to study the long-term health and status of bird populations across North America,” the society says. “Click here for the full history and the compiled nationwide data.”
To participate, head to West Harlem Piers around 131st Street at 8 a.m. on Sunday.
What kind of bird is this in the picture? saw him/her in our fire escape last week. Huge bird. Have picture if bird people are interested.
Red Tail Hawk I believe. Thankfully becoming more common since poisoning their prey, namely rats, is counterproductive to their preservation.
With so many advances being made in science, can’t they figure out a way to poison rats without harming the rats’ predators?
I believe that is an owl
Last count in Central Park there was 27 red tail hawks but you can see a lot more if you go up to Pelham Bay area of the Bronx towards the Long Island sound/orchard beach there’s many many of them I don’t know if anyone’s counting up there but come around 4 PM they’re just like seagulls covering the area with there pursing chirps looking for prey 🐀 One afternoon I counted at least 10 or 12 of them circling around the orchard beach area.
