The Philip Roth book “The Plot Against America” is being turned into an HBO miniseries with executive producers David Simon and Ed Burns, and they’re shooting on the Upper West Side on Thursday. Kate Hinds took the photo above on Central Park West between 81st and 82nd Street.

The book imagined an alternate history where Charles Lindbergh — known both for his aviation exploits and his fear-mongering about the influence of “the Jewish race” — beats Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940 presidential election.
The show stars Winona Ryder, Zoe Kazan and John Turturro, according to HBO.
Roth, who died last year, spent several years living on the Upper West Side.
Once the bike lane is in all these trailers will have to park on the west side of the street blocking entrances to buildings.
@john As the trailers do on every other street, when there is a shoot. It’s life. It’s parking. Why must everything be reduced to an attack on bike lanes???
What kind of commerce do the bike lanes bring? What kind of tax revenue do they generate? At least these trucks and the productions are a big part of this city’s economy. And provide jobs.
I pay taxes, and I use the bike lane. Same as a car using the road.
And why do cyclists want cars to be banned?
Same argument – different day.
Cyclists want cars banned? Where did you see that? Never seen that suggested at all.
There are several plot lines in the book that eerily mirror the recent rise in racism / white supremacy. It’ll be interesting to see it as an HBO miniseries.
And, anyone who hasn’t read the book: highly recommended. Many of the UWS independent book stores carry a large selection of Roth works.
Hopefully got a good deal along with the Mrs Maisel people to rent the same cars.
Roth has never adapted well to the screen, unfortunately.
They are filming today on 67th and 5th if you want to try to catch it.
I enjoyed The Human Stain.
Philip Roth’s writing encompassed a wide range of the American society and cut deep into human nature. As for Comment #2, I’d say that he was visionary, and our unfortunate present mirrors his plot of the triumph of evil. His vast oevre would have deserved the Nobel price.
“The Plot Against America” is about how fascism could come to the US. Lindbergh was not benign, and was not depicted as such in the book. Indeed, it is a warning against a Trump-style movement. Let’s recall in 1940 many Jews were immigrants, or first generation.
Most of the book takes place in Newark. I don’t recall much UWS content.
Fascism is not the Trump movement
Read the definition (forcible suppression of opposition, and strong regimentation of society and of the economy) This is exactly what the 20 left leaning candidates are planning on doing. The deplorable’s will be reelecting him for another 4 years because of coastal elites like yourself
reply to “John”:
when i was thinking of the parallels between the real-life Trump administration and the Lindbergh presidency as depicted in “The Plot Against America”, i was primarily thinking of the scapegoating and political targeting of immigrants. For Trump, this includes setting up a system of prison camps for refugees, including children. It also includes his false and hate-filled rhetoric against immigrants and Hispanics in general.
the targeting of the “other” and ethnic scapegoating is one hallmark of fascist movements.
It’s interesting that “John” calls me a “coastal elite.” Since i live in NYC, i am definitely “coastal”. I assume John is as well. How does he know I am elite? i am not economically elite, by a long shot. he makes a lot of assumptions. Maybe he thinks that because i can write a sentence and even a paragraph without making glaring grammatical errors, I am “an elitist.”
Oy.
*deplorables
Maybe master the apostrophe before moving on to complex sociopolitical topics?
Couldn’t have said it better myself, John. And believe me, I’ve had to do so on many occasions.
It’s worth the commotion on the UWS–Roth’s book couldn’t be more timely!!
oh these cars are killer. hate that I missed seeing this in person.
Can’t wait. Really loved the book. Pertinent now!!
