On Tuesday morning, Con Ed crews were replacing gas lines on 67th Street near CPW. At about 11:30 a.m., a crew member – Con Ed workers at the scene called him “a contractor” – hit a water main causing a geyser of water to explode upwards. One building staffer said it reached the 4th floor of Hotel Des Artistes, cracking, “Some people put blueprints on the table before you do the work.”
Department of Environmental Protection emergency workers came to the scene. Multiple crews were working to fix the break, which looked like a four-feet-deep swimming hole as of 12:40 p.m. Another building staffer said officials have given him “no clue” as to how long the repairs will take.
