John Oliver made a surprise appearance at the Westside Comedy Club on 75th Street on Saturday night, slipping in before the opening act and cracking jokes on a variety of subjects. The host of Last Week Tonight With John Oliver had a variety of salty things to say, according to our tipsters, Andrew and Rachel.
“He talked about politics and how he didn’t know how long we were going to have to deal with Trump. He also said you know that the state of America is bad when Anne Hathaway is not the most hated person in America.
He talked about going to Yankee Stadium to see his favorite Liverpool soccer team and being invited to meet with the players in the locker room at the same time as Daniel Craig and then being perplexed as to how to react when the entire team came out of the showers naked.
He also talked about celebrities being overvalued and gave an example of how he saw the last space shuttle launch in Florida and someone wanted a picture with him instead of the astronaut and the person asked the astronaut to take the picture and if the astronaut knew how to use their phone.”
He also did a set at Stand Up NY on 78th Street:
here's Mr. Oliver with our booker Candi. He did 20 minutes of material. Great guy and very nice to the audience and staff. pic.twitter.com/rLoIYY8QOp

Had a great moment where a bottle fell and John asked if everything was okay. The patron apologized and was surprised of how polite the crowd was. "English" he referred to them. Quite the opposite of a late show at a comedy club. He was a delight! pic.twitter.com/MlloZ7MOKU

He’s a sorry ambassador for England.
Geez, get a sense of humor.
He’s a comedian. You don’t like his humor? That’s a shame. Your comment is silly and pointless.
He’s a comedian and a very intelligent one. He’s isn’t in the US to represent England. He lives here with his wife, who I beleive is a veteran, and his children.
Yeah, he’s funny, smart, and successful.
But he shares a different political perspective, so that’s all that counts.
Umm…he’s an entertainer, not an ambassador. You didn’t know that?
Actually, John Oliver is a comedian. The UK ambassador to the US is Sir Nigel Kim Darroch.
Maybe Oliver! could replace Nigel Rees-Moggs-Chuffington or whatever his name is. Cause as a “comedian” he’s straight garbage. Those eyes, though..might start a war.
20 writers and Anne Hathaway joke is the zinger. He s about as funny as a migraine.
Smart he is not.
Not completely stupid, but not too smart either. Even though he looks like a half smart person.
Yoda says what now?
He’s brilliant!
So sick of everyone’s doom, gloom and snide remarks on here.
i find John Oliver to be brilliant. or at least his writers are, and then he gets credit for hiring brilliant writers.
“Last Week Tonight” is not only comedy, and not only social satire. Every week, the heart of the show is a long satirical essay that is not only funny but insightful and educational. He takes on issues that are often under-exposed, and he always has a unique take on them, even if you don’t agree with him. it’s really political and economic education.
I agree, he is brilliant!
Actually he’s nothing close to the “New King” – he has the lowest viewership of any late night show based on November’s numbers.
SHOW VIEWERS IN MILLIONS
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon 2.3
Late Show with Stephen Colbert 3.0
Jimmy Kimmel Live 2.3
Late Night with Seth Meyers 1.44
Late Late Show with James Corden 1.32
Last Call with Carson Daly 0.76
Last Week Tonight 0.65
Perhaps a bit less bias in the headline.
Ya, except he is on a pay cable service that only has 25% of the United States Households subscribed. So technically his number is 4 times that.
Love John Oliver. Love Last Week Tonight. He’s wonderful–funny, insightful, and truly educational. Plus, he’s got great values, and is completely representative of my own and those of most of the UWS, but maybe not those of East 56th Street.
I’m a huge fan of John Oliver. He’s a real “Stand Up Guy” (no pun intended, oh wait it was intended and true”.)
I wish I was there. I have to get out more often so I might have the thrill of seeing one of my favorite comics in person. I wish you all and John a WONDERFUL, HEALTHY, HAPPY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR NOW & FOREVER. Sincerely, Linda Jawitz
Seconded. John Oliver is a charming, smart, right-on-the-money entertainer. Spot on! He is a New York
fave. Who cares about the rest of the nation’s taste in comedy? John is OURS.
Nasty comment about Anne Hathaway. So easy for a powerful male to attack a female actor.
#mean,not funny
Are you not a proponent of equality? I, for one, don’t think women need to be coddled in the 21st century.
