Police shut down West End Avenue between 66th and 70th Street early Wednesday morning after a water main break just South of 69th Street. As of about 8:45 a.m. they were able to open the northbound lanes but the southbound lanes remained closed.
At least one building — 185 West End Avenue — lost water during the break. Bette Kerr, who took the photo below, said a worker told her that they found the source of the break rapidly, so they shut off the water quickly and can work to repair the break.
A spokesman for the city Department of Environmental Protection said they were on site and investigating.
That would explain the 4am jackhammer wakeup call. Thanks for the info as always, Westside Rag!
Still no water in 185 West End Ave but comforting to know DEP is on it.
Wasn’t there emergency water work there a few months ago?
That part of WEA was just repaved after construction. So, they’ll do a poor job of patching the road, and riding thru there will once again feel like driving through hell.
