Debris on the tracks at 50th Street are causing major delays and reroutings on the 1, 2 and 3 lines on Thursday morning. Around 8 a.m., the 1 wasn’t running at all between City College and South Ferry.
My morning … yes, that's an express train at a local stop going nowhere fast https://t.co/xdGsYPXauf pic.twitter.com/PexbNtp7I9

As of 8:39 a.m., the following changes were in affect, accroding to MTA:
Due to debris on the tracks at 50 St, there is limited service on the 7th Ave service corridor. Expect delays.
Some southbound trains are running on the line from 149 St-Grand Concourse to Nevins St.
Southbound trains are running express from 72 St to Times Sq-42 St.
Expect delays on , , , and trains.
Got to mta.info for the updated status.
I got out and walked to work with a flood of others. Some stood and waited hahah for a 104 bus. Why is it that the 104 buses are STILL as scarce as hens’ teeth? The idea was no one took the buses- well yeah, because they come so infrequently. As on this morning. Another great start to our day, courtesy of the MTA.
“…as scarce as hens’ teeth…” made me LOL. Thanks for that!
And yes, this is ridiculous.
I tried to get on a M104 or the M5 and the were so crowded and the number of people waiting was so large that I gave up.
I also walked over the the 72nd/CPW station and the platform was overcrowded with people waiting on the stairs.
So I went home, did the NYT crossword puzzle, and left for work at 10.
I was on the 1 train at 7:30 am and everything was fine, so I’d like to know exactly what kind of debris it was that shut down a major transit system. Shouldn’t they have a solution for this by now?!
Yes there is a solution- people being civilized and not throwing their garbage on the tracks!
Just makes us realize how crucial it is to update the subway infrastructure NOW as incidents like this become more and more frequent. By the crowd scenes I witnessed I suspect there were thousands of Upper Westsiders who were late to work, school and other obligations! Can anyone explain how a pile of trash could bring three major subway lines to a complete halt?! There are a lot of angry subway riders who want answers!
Missed this notice. The sign on the subway entrance said “GOOD SERVICE”. Took me 45 minutes to go 5 stoops
As I was affected by this, I would be interested to know what this “debris” consisted of. Did a garbage pail fall off a collecting train, or did someone throw a lot of stuff onto the tracks, or was it, like, something liquid and hard to clean up? Obviously something beyond the normal debris… What’s the full story?
Turns out it wasn’t “debris” after all; but the protective covering over third rail.
“Furious commuters slammed the MTA Thursday morning after a 30-foot piece of the third rail’s protective board came loose, slowing the commute from Upper Manhattan and the Bronx, agency officials said.”

Yes, can WSR follow up?
I think I was on the first train they took out of service at 66th. Then a #2 rolled in and everyone was trying to get on it.To go where? They’d already announced there was an issue at 59th and then they started announcing there was a problem at 50th. It was pretty obvious no trains were going to move anytime soon. I walked the 15 blocks I still needed to go – and I didn’t see a single M104 go by as I did.
Things were still a tad slow when I went from 96 to 42nd just before noon. I mentioned to my lunch companion that things were delayed because of “debris” on the track. We then debated about the cryptic nature of the word – “debris”. Was it a candy wrapper, bigger than a bread box?, perhaps a Buick?
No wonder Scott Stringer said that pledging City funds to that Black Hole of a company , the MTA is a waste of money.. If the Mayor and the Goernor would stop their juvenile bickering maybe something would get done.
Still creeping along at 6:11pm. Announcement just said delays from 34th to South Ferry!! Besides only local service 96th to 42d.
Roger Elizabeth De Bris?
Keep it gay!! 🙂
Why do folks throw their refuse on the tracks anyway?
Because they’re there?
“Debris” = Disintegrating track equipment the MTA is supposed to maintain.
I was on a #2 train, and we had to back into 72nd from below 59th Street. We were told it was a “rail condition,” which is like telling a patient they have a “rare disease.” No help. If there’s a “condition” with the train or rail or driver, I know we’re not going anywhere.
This was caused by diverting funds years ago to the LIRR extension and away from subway maintenance.
