The Wind Advisory for NYC has been extended until 10:00 PM tonight, 11/21. The advisory has been issued for sustained winds of 20 mph to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph. During periods of high winds, residents should use caution when walking or driving high profile vehicles. Winds at these speeds can cause flying debris, turn unsecured objects into projectiles, and cause power outages. To prepare, charge cell phone batteries, gather supplies, and turn refrigerators and freezers to a colder setting. Always stay clear of downed power lines. If you are affected by an outage, turn off all appliances and keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to prevent food spoilage. Do not use generators indoors. If you lose power and have a disability or access needs, or use Life Sustaining Equipment (LSE) and need immediate assistance, please dial 9-1-1. For the latest weather information, visit www.weather.gov/nyc.
News:
After months and months of delays, Japanese restaurant Sun-Chan at 2707 Broadway (103rd Street) will return Monday, according to signs posted on the windows. Just a few days ago, locals had posted a sign pleading with the restaurant to return.
Brad Hoylman, a gay Jewish state senator who represents the UWS and other neighborhoods, found swastikas etched into the door to his building in Greenwich Village, part of a recent rise in hate incidents in the city. NYPD is investigating it as a hate crime. Cuomo has appointed a special hate crime unit because of the spike in incidents.
Tourists are flocking to the Pond in Central Park to gawk at raccoons. Officials aren’t so happy. “While not illegal (though feeding bears, moose and deer is in New York State), it is risky for people and creatures alike: Raccoons can carry rabies, and emboldened raccoons that do not stay in the underbrush can get themselves into trouble.”
Raccoons appearing in daylight and near sources of water has a high probability of rabies. They are nocturnal animals and it is not normal for them to appear during daylight. Keep yourself and your pets away from them. The Park services should trap the raccoons, vaccinate them and relocate them.
Lucien – totally correct.
Dozens of people showing up at CEC meetings to participate has largely resulted in them being ignored and a plan that very few people are happy with. So perhaps no one should show up for the actual vote and maybe this will result in it being changed to a satisfactory plan (though there is no plan that will make everyone happy). One can hope…
Gawkers don’t have to go to the pond to see raccoons. The trash receptacle at the 90th Street entrance to Central Park has a regular visitor who frolics and forages, paying no mind to passers-by.
Better Idea for the Raccoons. Trap them and exterminate them or have some a few hours of open hunting season to take them down 1 x 1 .
Can’t the raccoons be redirected to the White House North aka Trump Tower?
Have seen raccoons at Wollman Rink (aka Trump Rink) right outside the ice rink.
GO Sun-Chan!!!! Can’t wait for a big bowl of miso and a plate of whatever else they have prepared. The neighborhood has missed you and we will be so glad to have you back. Good news at last.
I wanted to love Sun-Chan but it was such a dreary place. I’ll give it another try since so many seem to have loved it.
They evidently took some of the feedback because they upgraded the interior lights. Went last night and it was much brighter.
