Upper West Siders are looking for some good vibes, and some think the answer could be a warm and comforting bowl of ramen. People have been writing hopeful notes on a sign posted at Sun-Chan, the Japanese restaurant at 2707 Broadway (103rd Street), begging the place to reopen. The sign says “We need you now! More than ever!” and people have been writing notes on it like “We love you,” “We need you” “Please come back” and even “Ramen cures political woes.”
“A nice sign of community during a fairly draining time up in this neighborhood,” wrote Christine, who took the photo above. Candles have also been placed at the spot.
Sun-Chan closed in the spring because of a prolonged gas leak in its building. While the gas problem was eventually fixed and other restaurants in the same building reopened, Sun-Chan remained closed.
In September, the owner told one of our readers they were about to reopen. And in October, the owner was apparently interviewing people for jobs there. But nothing has materialized and no one was answering the phone on Monday.
Thank you for bringing attention to this. The mom+pop team, Kumiko and Tokishige, and their whole staff are neighbors who are all dearly missed. The place is a slice of old-time heaven. https://www.w102-103blockassn.org/blog/hyper-local-eats-sun-chan-on-my-corner-makes-me-happy
Yes, love Sun Chan. Please come back!
Yes, I love this place. Many sightings of my favorite rockstar, David Johansen there. Hope it reopens.
Please come back Sun Chan, we love and miss you! Your restaurant has been sorely missed by the entire neighborhood. Hoping for good news…
