News:
An SRO building on 79th street called the Park 79 that was fined for operating as a hotel has been sold, and the apartments are expected to be converted into new residential units, with a potential expansion because of air rights. “Fairstead Capital has purchased the vacant seven-story, 108-key Park 79 Hotel at 117 West 79th Street, on the Upper West Side, for $22.5 million. The new owners plan to convert the 32,172-square-foot SRO building into an undisclosed number of residential apartments…The property comes with 27,780 square feet of air rights, allowing for a potential expansion.”
A cab driver was robbed last week. “The first robbery happened on the Upper West Side when two men stuck up their driver, 43, at Broadway and W. 105th St. at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, cops said.”
A real estate company is looking to sell the 146 rent-regulated apartments in a building that converted into condos for $105 million. “Starrett, a division of Cohen’s Pembroke Cos., is looking to unload the rent-regulated apartments at 175 West 95th Street, a 28-story rental building that Starrett converted into a condominium property in 2013. The building, with an alternate address of 733 Amsterdam Avenue, also has three commercial units.” The question now: How long will those rentals stay under rent regulation?
The Upper West Side home of Cosmo girl Helen Gurley Brown has a new owner, who paid a pretty penny for it. “Helen Gurley Brown’s turreted quadruplex atop the exclusive Beresford co-op at 211 Central Park West, where she lived for four decades until her death in 2012 and which was bedecked in midcentury glamour, has finally sold. At $19,380,000, it was the second most expensive transaction of the week, according to city records.”
A homeless person stabbed a 24-year-old homeless man near Strawberry Fields in Central Park on Thursday morning. “The police said the victim was uncooperative. Â No arrests have been made.”
Renters may be entitled to large rent breaks because of a city tax break given to landlords called J-51. “To learn whether your building is currently receiving J-51 benefits, go to the Department of Finance’s Property Tax Benefit Information portal on the Internet. This site contains information about tax breaks. Click to search by property address, enter your borough, house number and street name, and the results should tell you about any tax benefits, including J-51.” ProPublica has more on what to look for, and how landlords have been overcharging some tenants.
Police blocked off access to the Broadway median at 89th 88th Street in the morning and early afternoon Sunday, as seen in the photo below. Our anonymous tipster spoke to a security guard, who said a homeless person had been found dead on the scene. Neither an NYPD spokesperson nor Helen Rosenthal’s office had information about what happened. Update: police say the deceased person was a man, but did not have further details.

Oh, YECHHH! That’s New Jersey, isn’t it? Feh!
Wait a mo’…isn’t that Governor Christie on the horizon?
Ooopsie, wrongggg!. It’s just a large building!
Fat joke! I love making fat jokes! My friends think I’m a hoot!
“SRO Buildings Continue to Vanish”
That is the dream of many come to fruition.
OMG, what a heartless, evil way of thinking.
Stressed SRO tenants are human beings and have rights, some of you ex-lawmen earn a living taking advantage of and hurting others. (sick)
YOU do not really live in this community.
May the Creator grant you the blessing of walking in their shoes.
D.O. you have misinterpreted my Comment. But I’m glad that you vented.
The homeless woman’s death was at 88th and Broadway; not 89th.
The Naumberg orchestral concert season actually kicked off on June 14. Tomorrow’s concert is the third, not the first, in the series; two more are scheduled for 7/19 and 8/2. A fine way to spend a summer evening in Central Park!
At our upper west side SRO tenants face chemical abuse by assailants known to the Manager who placed them in our building to abuse us. Violating the Clean AIr Act Article 13-E
NYPD said they can do nothing as it’s a Landlord Tenant issue.
And they have experienced the feeling of chemicals while there to witness the abuse.
Despite being criminal to spray another person’s door, and mop the floor with chemicals, there is no relief or exposure of this abuse has been brought by media. It’s like Flint Michigan none were believed.
It is tenant harassment and the Mayor’s Task Force did nothing to help these tenants who reported the abuse for the last two years.
Tenants are getting sick, having strokes, 6 died in 2015 (all women) and targeted tenants are the remaining SRO tenants in this building… this is an environmental issue as none of us can escape the air we breath.
We are not believed, we are abused, we witness our abusers doing it, and we are ignored by all who could stop it.
this is so troubling…
it frustrates me that this goes on and the authorities do nothing. have you called Helen Rosenthal’s office?
Yes we have reached out to every agency every office in this city and no one sends anyone to end it, they report zero because they come during hours of 9-5 when they can clean up their messes. It’s an environmental crisis one that Flint Michigan residents can relate to and believe because we are terated like we’re crazy and lying. We are not, we are being poisoned.
”NOT SAFE”
Would you please provide a little more information.
Has anyone tried to approach the offending culprit, politely?
Your comment sounds familiar.
Try to get an air filter.
How are the many deaths being reported and the final investigations recorded?
Can you open your windows, do you have ceiling vents, or central a/c?
Yikes . . . are you on Broadway?!?

FYI-
It was less that one year ago the a Bronx Hotel was the center
of a lethal respiratory outbreak that sickened over ”124 people and killed 12”.
A tragedy that could have been preventable.
2) Syracuse student 21yrs old found dead in hotel room, etc., etc.
Perhaps, malicious negligence?
