Friends of Stryker Park, a group attempting to transform the North side of 97th street between Amsterdam and Columbus into a green space with community amenities, is holding three events this month.
The group will hold events on the Northwest corner of Columbus and 97th for the next three Saturdays from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m..
“Our goal for this event is to create interest for a potential public amenity and gauge input from members of the community,” said Tim Dewald, a community organizer for Friends of Stryker Park.
“The sidewalk is unusually wide, about 50 feet,” said Joe Gall, an architect and long term Upper West Side resident. “It’s mostly concrete. Seven driveways bisect the block; they’re unmarked and dangerous. People in the community told us they’d like this fixed.”

Thank you FOSP! Would love to see this happen, a park would be a wonderful improvement for this block.
The Friday Farmers’ Market makes very good use of the 50′ wide sidewalk. See you tomorrow!
They can start by turning their sacred private parking into a green community space. No? Usurpation of a public city street sounds better?
Not happening.
The word community has been hijacked by all the wrong groups for all the wrong reasons.
A block party? Like a real block party? A cookout with loud music and dancing? Will the quality of lifer’s allow for this? Or is it just another stretch of upper class people buying vegetables and you’re calling it a block party. Big difference between fun and “Family friendly”
Bravo and Edie, Please translate your comments into English. Thanks
Great! Go for it!!
As long as the farmer’s market remains, some green space sounds good to me
Hi Tom, This is Jim from Friends of Stryker Park. Yes, the green market is staying and we hope to work with GrowNYC and the City to make the space even more accommodating to the green market sellers and shoppers.
That’s a wonderful idea. Hope people aren’t feeding the pigeons those days!
