Clint Eastwood’s eyebrows seemed to be saying “Do You Feel Lucky, Punk?” this week while he was directing the movie “Sully” on 86th street and Broadway. Thanks to Jeffrey Wade for the photo.
Sully is about Capt. Chesley Sullenberger, who made an emergency landing in the Hudson in 2009. It stars Tom Hanks.
Here’s another shot below:
Another reader, Elias Friedman, noted that the shooting (and requisite parking restrictions) occurred during Sukkot, making it inconvenient for people who were observing the holiday. This has been a complaint before.
It took me a while to get over my disappointment with Clint for doing Bridges of Madison County.
But I got past it.
There, I feel better.
Re: “…the shooting (and requisite parking restrictions) occurred during Sukkot, making it inconvenient for people who were observing the holiday.”
Separation of Church (okay, Synagogue) and State folks!
You have every right to celebrate your holiday!
You do NOT have the right to make the rest of the world stop because of your beliefs!!
What?? The world stopped?? I had no idea. They’re just trying to make a living like the rest of us. So sorry if you were inconvenienced in some minor way. This is such small potatoes it’s not even worth discussing. I hope there are many more films shot in New York, providing employment for people, and pleasure for people when the work is done.
Welcome to the UWS . . . Ugh.
“Separation of church and state” just means we don’t have an established state religion, like the Church of England. It doesn’t mean that the state can’t offer accommodations to religious groups on occasion. We suspend alternate side of the street parking rules for holidays of various religions. Why then should the city issue filming permits that will require people to move their cars on a holiday when the alternate side parking rules are suspended (as they were on Monday and Tuesday)?
“Separation of church and state” means much, much more than simply not having a state established religion. Jefferson understood it so, and decades and decades of court precedents have refined the definition to mean such.
But you are correct that it does NOT mean that the state can’t offer reasonable accommodation to religious groups, as long as this accommodation is available to any religious group.
Always amazes me how many people.in Manhattan complain about parking.
It always amazes me how many people complain about people complaining about parking.
It seems to me that people who complain about parking don’t like the inconvience.
Those who complain about those people, just don’t like…people, is it?
Don’t like cars in our city. Love people and bikes and public transportation.
I hate the bicycles in the city. Riding through lights, through crowds, on sidewalks, and they smell like sweaty garbage any time they show up anywhere. They bring them into the subway and elevators taking up a ton of space.
I’m happy with taxis, pedestrians, and the subway. Get rid of the bikes and extra large unnecessary vehicles.. like huge SUVs with one person in them.
So Effy and John,
The one common agreement between you is that “huge SUVs with one person in them” have got to go.
So, if there are no other objections, I say we ban them immediately following the Comments period.
Who cares about a movie about Sully? I mean, it was an amazing feat and all that, and I dig Sully himself, but it sounds like 10 minutes of entertainment and 80 minutes of boooorrriing. How about a movie about a crazy actor who went from being fairly reasonable to speaking to chairs? Call it “Go ahead make my bed”. I’d watch that wacky shiznit any day.
Re: “Who cares about a movie about Sully?”
Your statement implies that really nobody, ESPECIALLY yourself, cares about Captain Sullenberger’s amazing feat of heroism.
As Longfellow’s Priscilla said, “Speak for yourself….” because MANY do care about:
1) two superbly capable professionals who kept their cool and saved not just their passengers but possibly hundreds on the ground who might have been killed had he decided to return to La Guardia with a power-less airplane;
2) AND the response of first-responders like the captain and crew of a NY Waterways ferry that arrived almost immediately to help rescue passengers;
3) AND the technology that allowed the A320 Airbus to hit the water and FLOAT rather than breaking apart.
So there’s LOTS of us who care about that amazing episode.
Last I looked, Captain Sully was doing the job he is highly compensated for doing. He is not driving a Subaru cross country. And the fact of the matter is, he will tell you that. Keyriste.
Yeah, but no one cares that “Longfellow’s Priscilla” said “Speak for yourself.” Pretentious much?
English major?
Someone needs to get Clint to Wardrobe stat.
When people reach 85, WombatNYC, they sometimes sport padded underwear that needs camouflaging.
That’s how old guys dress. They dig those pleated pants.
Apparently political correctness permits denegrating senior citizens.
A polo shirt and khakis is now “old guy” garb?
Sheesh. When did the hipsters take over, anyway? Do we all have to grow square beards for you now, too?
I think the issue in this case is the *ratio* of polo shirt to khakis.
I agree.
That too.
The comment addresses Ill fitting pleated pants.
Maybe he’s trying to blend into the neighborhood?
Love Clint! And can’t believe no one has yet pointed out the irony of the fact that this photo shows him standing next to an empty chair…..
with his name on it, in case he has a senior moment
You win the internet today.
The movie crew is provided with tents of food, as though they are starving to death, and there are no restaurants in the area. They are a nuisance, and provide nothing to the local economy…NOTHING
The film production is required to provide food for crew and actors per union contracts. Sometimes they don’t cater full meals but coffee/tea/snacks and hand out vouchers for meals.
As far as film production, the industry brings in millions of dollars for the local economy in jobs. It yearly hires 130,000 local workers and provides additional revenue for over 4,000 local businesses (and those numbers are very conservative). It is a growing industry here and unlike some industries, the environmental impact is very low.
The benefit to the city is overstated because of all the incentives given out to film here. Also, I can’t see how these union members can afford to live here these days. They must have another income source if they do. Crews definitely do not live here.
Are you kidding? IATSE NY alone has tens of thousands of working, skilled guild members, and that’s just a slice of it.
Also, NYC doesn’t provide any financial incentives to shoot in the city. They’ll help with substantial logistical support, but even that’s been a little meh since Katherine Oliver left.
If they live on the UWS, they must live in their car.
No, obviously. Many of the teamster or below the line crew jobs can offer very decent comp. Certainly decent enough to live somewhere within the five boroughs, or even – gasp – on the UWS.
Don’t they all live in New Jersey?
Let’s ignore for a sec that there are actual New Yorkers working on this thing, particularly in the well-compensated guild trades and the things they need to buy, they buy locally. Aaaand let’s ignore that the movie is being made by Warner Brothers, owned by Time Warner, an important NYC-based company. Let’s instead focus on your critical food question.
Where do you think the catering actually comes from?
I think what “those eyebrows seem to be saying” is will I need my walker to get across this street or should I use the cane? This guy seems to be getting less relevant as he continues his last gasps of a career as a director. Oh well. Hopefully he will do Sully Sullenberger some justice. He is a brave and honorable man and did a great thing.
Do the film productions contribute to our local organizations? I was speaking with a friend who lives in Ditmas ParK (which is also popular for filming) and they ask for a contribution to the neighborhood association.
“Cntribution”? Sounds like attempted extortion. Neighborhood association does not own the neighborhood, the park, the streets, and is not owed money by any business. The self-appointed authorities follow mafia business model.
Welcome to NYC Clint!
I’m a huge fan of yours – even though you made a fool of yourself at the 2012 Republican Convention.
Clint just has resting vinegar face
God bless us Clint . Any which way you can . Film 100 more in Manhattan . Any which way but loose. Don’t listen to all the local arangatagns negative comments.there sissy’s. Now left turn Clyde directly to the make up trailer for a powder we don’t want anybody sees the director sweating! Just playing Clint . God bless . And create a great day!
