More bubble tea, Chinese food, and candy are coming to the Upper West Side.
Coco Tea, a bubble tea and juice shop, is opening on 72nd street between Columbus and Amsterdam in what used to be a candy shop. Their website says Coco Tea started in Taiwan and now has branches all over the world. Thanks to Michael and James for the tips.
Ollie’s is opening a new restaurant on Broadway and 103rd street, the former home of the 103rd Street Deli. “It looks like (I hope) they are going to use the beautiful original door frames,” writes Claudia.
Think Closet, the clothing store on Columbus between 75th and 76th street, has closed. Thanks to Beatrice for the tip.
Sugarfina, a Los Angeles-based candy store is opening a new candy store on the first floor of the Time Warner Center, replacing Tesla, according to Crain’s. “Sugarfina, which sells gummy bears made with real champagne and makes many of its products from small factories in Europe, is certainly higher-end than the candy aisle at the local drugstore—a 4.2 ounce box costs around $8. The brand once sold a steamer trunk of its wares for $5,000 to a Saudi Arabian princess, Ms. O’Neill said. Roughly 60% of sales come from gifts.” Thanks to Andrew Matthew for the tip.
The newsstand on Amsterdam between 72nd and 73rd street, closed last week renovated last week. It did not close as we previously reported. Thanks to Andrew and D.R.
Furry Paws, the pet store on Amsterdam Avenue and 92nd street, closed last week because of a rent hike. “This is the friendliest Pet Store on the Upper West Side,” wrote Nora. “A real loss! Soon all that will be left of the neighborhood is big box stores – like Petco. No more personal service and that great smile of Shaq waving at you and your dog as you walk by. I will surely miss them!”
A new Chirping Chicken is now open on the corner of Columbus Avenue and 106th Street. Thanks to Lisa for the tip and photo.
It is terrible that all those little newsstands close. The kiosks are almost gone in the West 70s. Don’t the rich people need a place to buy mints and lottery tickets. Sorry to see them go.
Do the rich need lottery tx?
#1) Are you sure that the news store on Amsterdam between 72nd-73rd, closed, or were they just renovating? It was open on Friday and, I think, yesterday also, when I passed by.
#2) Nail salon between 70th and 71st (2054 B’way) has opened.
Very sad about Furry Paws. I sorely miss their old store at 66th and Amsterdam – good service and a nice selection of everything. Buying cat litter and toys on Amazon now doesn’t have the same feeling as going into Furry Paws.
Well Kate, I love shopping on Amazon & Chewy.com where I pay up to 50% less than Furry Paws & Petco. I also bought a bully stick at Furry Paws which made my dog violently ill. When I went back the next day and told them, all I got was a blank stare and a weak smile. No sorry; nothing. After being a customer for over ten years. Never went back.
Chewy is a great online store. They do have the best prices and are personable.
Oh — I will miss Furry Paws as well. So friendly, so convenient….especially with Playground Pups across the street.
every time I go in Petco on 92nd st…I see more and more empty shelf space..I asked several times and get same answer(not that they know of).I wonder if they’re going out, after all this is a 2 story bldg in Manh on Broadway and we all know what eventually happens to them. They also have one on 98th & 76th & Col.
To add another major change coming to Broadway & 90th.
Food Emporium is now in bankruptcy & to be auctioned on an unknown date in October. Have not cared for store’s products beyond basics, or weekly price hikes, but wonder what we will do for a supermarket….
you knew this was coming for Food Emp.You can see it in the store:empty shelves, lights off in freezers, tiles in ceiing missing etc
As far as I know, Food Emporium was the last little vestige of the Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company (A & P). I thought I ready in the business section about a month ago, that they sold off the last few stores to another company or a hedge fund or something like that. And that A & P is officially – no more.
These two Times articles provide a good primer on the bankruptcy.

https://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/02/nyregion/a-p-bankruptcy-means-new-york-chains-birthplace-will-lose-last-store.html
They expect to sell about 120 stores (mostly outside the city, though one in Riverdale) to various other chains, and to close 25 more. It’s worth noting that A&Ps brands also included Pathmark and Waldbaum’s (as well as Food Emporium).
At the time of the filing, the fate of the Food Emporium branches was still up in the air (they were hoping for a buyer, but hadn’t found one), and I haven’t seen anything definitive since.
A bigger question is what’s happening with the Pathmark on 125th Street? This is part of the A&P family, and so far no one is stepping up to fill in this gap.
Does anyone know if Mezzogiorno which has been “in the works” for months on Broadway between 108th and 109th will ever open?
The children’s toy store on east side of Broadway between 84/85 has a “Going out of Business” sign up in the window.
Does anyone know if Sal & Carmine’s Pizza is closed permanently? Passed by on Saturday and Sunday but they were closed…they seemed to be operating with the bare basics over the last couple of months…hardly any napkins available…limited soda count, etc…
I hope it’s closed permanently. The staff was as rude as can be, showed ZERO appreciation for their customers, and when you bought pizza there instead of putting it nicely in a box, they would fold it in half and put it in a paper bag. They treated their own pizza like garbage. Not to mention it was too salty. Good ridden.
I don’t doubt your story but I’ve gone to Sals for many years and I have only received a slice (as in 1) in a paper bag. Two slices or more was always put into a box. One thing I notice about many people on the UWS is they mistake someone that doesn’t speak to them as that person being rude. Perhaps that is the case in your situation. If you’re looking for friends from your neiggborhood pizza shop you have problems. Either way you don’t have to eat there if you had a bad experience.
I came here for the same reason. I just called to see if anyone would pick up but nothing. Lets hope it opens up again, it’s the best pizza in the UWS.
I don’t live in that neighborhood but, occasionally, we venture into the Columbia University area.
We think that V&T’s pizza is one of the best in NYC. But who can argue taste?
So I needed a slice of pizza like I was a crackhead so I ventured over to V&T. Eh! I mean the pizza was better than say Famiglia or Two Boots or any of the Mexican Pizza places around. And no I’m not a racists so people please save it. Thanks for the suggestion.
Many people with a Columbia affiliation will agree with you, and not only because V&T’s comes with a massive heaping of happy nostalgia for many of us.
The Hungarian Pastry Shop tugs at the same strings.
My husband goes to V&T for nostalgia — and to the Hungarian pastry shop, as well. I wonder whether the pastry shop still has “all you can drink” coffee self-service.
We just *love* the waiters at V&T — especially, their old-world warmth and generosity. We always over-tip when we go there. It’s a family-owned business.
*and* it has great pizza.
Question:
Chirping Chicken used to be called “Chirpin’ Chicken”. Is it still owned or managed by the woman who won multiple millions in Lotto?
I was wondering whether the name change could have something to do with a change of ownership rather than a trademark kind of thing.
If I won the lotto I wouldn’t be opening a business which tortures and murders millions of lives each year.
I would also be getting the hell out of NYC.
Who goes to a pet store, or any store, for that matter anymore? Between google shopping express or wag.com or amazon same day, you can get the same thing for cheaper, and they bring it right to your door! Plus, the added benefit of creating jobs for the delivery drivers, a win win.
Some of us still enjoy face-to-face interactions as well as supporting local businesses. Without those businesses I can’t imagine how the UWS or any neighborhood would remain vibrant.

When is Juice Press opening at 350 Amsterdam?
I am told, by their Lexington Avenue location, that Farinella’s new place (Amsterdam, 72-73rd St.) *”should”* open for business today.
I emphasize the “should”, because 3 weeks ago they told me that the new location would open “within 2 weeks”; also, the phone number appearing on their awning is not (yet) a working number.
