The upper part of the Upper West Side has a new meat emporium, as Schatzie Prime Meats gets set to open its doors on Broadway between 101st and 102nd street on Friday. Schatzie moved from 87th street and Amsterdam Avenue at the start of the month.
The new space, which was formerly PicNic Market, is bigger than the Amsterdam Avenue spot, allowing the father-son team to open a burger joint along with the butcher shop that they’ve been running for years, Richard Schatz told us. The burger spot will be called Ritchie’s Burger Joint at Schatzie’s, and it will probably open at the end of the month. Schatz says they plan to offer eight beers on tap, chicken wings, and meat ground-to-order. There are expected to be 40 seats.
“We’re going to have the best burgers, the best beers, the best mac and cheese in America,” he said.
In the window, a sign says that customers should “Invest in our stocks: beef stock, veal stock, chicken stock, lamb stock.”

I’m looking forward to this hamburger heaven. Now if could only get a decent pizza place here on the UWS.
Try Sal & Carmine’s 101st – great old school pizza…and they’ve been around since 1995 (or earlier).
Sal and Carmine’s is true old school pizza and it’s on the same block as the new Schatzie’s.
Actually, Sal & Carmines has been around since the 1950s. But they haven’t been good for 15 years.
Juan,
I used to share your complaint-but two new pizzerias have shut me up. Little Italy on 92nd and Broadway and Numero 28 on Amsterdam and 92nd. Different styles but both are terrific. And yeah S&Cs has gobe down hill regrettably
Mamas pizza on 106th. Best pizza and out of the way of yuppies
“Yuppies?” Is it 1983 again?
Um, never been to Sal & Carmines, or Buca?
Sorry that they’ve moved uptown tho that neighborhood needs them! They are the best butchers, best meat and they know how to cook!
Woo Hoo! Can’t wait for Schatzie! As a son of a butcher myself, I can attest that they really know their, um, meat! This is great news for the neighborhood.
Whoa, great news! Welcome to the neighborhood!
We are so excited to have them in our neighborhood and we are also excited to have them at Taste of Hope this year for our 10th Anniversary on April 30th! You can be the first to taste of their pulled pork sandwiches!

Really excited about this one! Welcome Schatzie’s, I’ll be seeing you soon!
Sal & Carmine’s used to be great. Now… not so much. Very inconsistent at best but heading in the direction of pretty bad. UWS really could use someplace that makes exceptional pizza.
I hope they still serve their dirty brisket sandwiches.
For excellent Grandma and Sicilian, try Little Italy Pizza on 92 adn Bway.
Passed by yesterday and picked up two huge dirty brisket sandwiches. I didnt see it on the menu, but they do have them. Delicious.
Love the dirty brisket.
Interesting POV about Little Italy. In my view, the gold standard for grandma pizza on the UWS was Dean’s. Little Italy’s is fine, but it’s not nearly as good – much more “commercial grade” with an insane amount of grease. Not terrible, tho.
Time for a Mac contest!!!
Can’t wAit
Schatzie and Richie,
Welcome to our neighbourhood! We can hardly wait for the burgers!
Your meat is the best! Oh those steaks!
The Kibbe you did for us was fabulous!
Chicken pot pie always in my freezer as well as Lasagna!
“…eight beers on tap, chicken wings, and meat ground-to-order” Shut up and take my money?
How’re prices on meat?
What luck for this neighborhood…a fabulous butcher shop AND (what will prove to be) an outstanding burger joint! The City keeps getting better and better every day!
I think a good butcher will be most welcome in our corner of the UWS. We haven’t had one since the the closing of Harry Oppenheimer (B’way & 99th) about about six years ago.
Decent burgers are also missed; the blocks north of 96th have not seen any of the trendy new burger spots that our neighbors to the south can now choose from. Though I eat at home virtually all the time now, I might try it.
I do remember when I first moved up here, almost 40 years ago, there was, for a few years, a nifty little burger shop on the west side of the 99th-100th St. block of Broadway (where one-half of the atrocious Barnett Ariel now sits). Small, unpretentious but juicy burgers. Those type of burger joints have all but vanished from the city.
Forgot to ask….
Anyone know why PicNic closed?
PicNic — food variable — wine vastly overpriced. Service on the low end of acceptable.
would like to contact ypi about deliveries
