A woman who was apparently attempting to park her car Wednesday night ended up accelerating backwards into a brownstone patio on 84th street between Columbus Avenue and Central Park West with such force neighbors on the block could feel the impact.
“It was a new car for her. So she wasn’t used to it. She climbed out the window,” said Emily Baer, who was on the scene. “The woman was escorted to the EMT for a check up,” said Matt, another tipster. FDNY officials told our tipsters that it did not appear to be alcohol-related.
NYPD and FDNY showed up and eventually towed the car out of the patio area using a large NYPD vehicle (video by Emily Baer below).

The scene on Thursday morning:
Ahh, the sympathy. It was a new car. She wasn’t used to it. blah blah. Did it not have a brake pedal and an accelerator pedal just like her last car? In the same place? Next time get a car with Park Assist if you can’t park. lol.
meanwhile, the owner of the brownstone now has to deal with the NYC buildings dept AND the landmarks commission ad nauseum to get the permits to redo the front… which will have to look exactly like it did before. requiring multiple inspections, IF you can find a reputable mason company that can navigate the red tape.
My condolences.
I went thru it myself, up in the 90’s, on a park block, 3 years ago… the whole stoop had to be rebuilt.
@drg That was the FIRST thing I thought of too when I read the article… I feel so very bad for the owner of that property!
The owner, if they have sense will find a good architect to project manage the rebuild.
The driver of the car and their insurance company will realize that what looks like $1000 railing repair just became a $20k job with permits and architects etc.
And she probably does not even live here!
…or have insurance
I’m struggling to understand how one gets into that position from a purported attempt at parallel parking. The car is perpendicular to the street.
I was also surprised the car has New York plates.
Yes, that is what I can’t get my head around – how in the world to get a car perpendicular to the street like that……….
She was trying to parallel park…OK? So how did she end up perpendicular? Oh well….nobody was seriously injured and thats good.
Hear the jackass hipsters on that video… Get out of our neighborhood.
