Key Fresh & Natural, a supermarket that just opened at 620 Amsterdam Avenue (90th street) in August, is already up for lease, according to a listing on the real estate site Agorafy. Key spent $2.8 million building out the space, which had previously been Saigon Grill.
It’s now up for rent for $79,166 a month, and is asking for key money, as with many commercial lease deals. There’s a 15-year triple-net lease on the space. The new lessor can take possession of the space immediately, and the inventory is included in the deal, according to the listing.
Not surprised. Place is pretty “meh”. Westside Market could probably do well in that space.
I liked the place. The produce was fresh, it was sort of spacious by Manhattan supermarket standards, prices were reasonable, and it had an eclectic beer selection. The checkout though would cause you to rip your hair out. There were several checkout stations, but never more than two (very slow) people working the counters.
I wanted to like this place, and did find the produce decent and the prices reasonable. But man, I agree with the earlier posters: Seriously unpleasant employees. I realize being a cashier can be a tough tedious job, but still.
Well if you think that this place has bad quality then you should to go to another place that you can find your standards for you. I personally found the prices and things great. The workers for me were friendly same as cashiers. This place had a great selection of things. The only complain i had that the cashiers were slow at times but still. Speaking more than one language helps its a shame this place will close the rent is damn high. Now i need to go to its sister location at 85st.
Yeah… most people took your advice which is why they’re closing!
I found the store difficult to navigate and poorly designed, with so-so produce selections – the cashiers friendly enough. But that isn’t the real story of why it failed; it probably has to do more with the high rent and the traffic there than anything else. Guess Key Fresh has a couple million to burn to try it out.
Sure do miss Saigon Grill! Wish Malaysian Grill could come back there. Or Popover? But who can afford that ridiculous rent? Amst. Ave doesn’t command the same prices as Broadway.
I sure do hope another bank moves in.
Yes, this store’s layout was confusing and the cashiers not the best, but that’s most supermarkets. At least it was another alternative that was less expensive than Food Emporium. The rent is absolutely insane; especially for that location. This illustrates what’s going wrong on the upper Westside. All we get are trendy places that are priced for the wealthy. The things and places that made the Westside affordable and charming are going the way of the dinosaur.

i wentthe instead of the other key food on 86th beciase its closer to my house. I liked that it was cleaner then the other one and also the sales flyers were a bit different, so can get different sales at the diffrent key foods on the same week. true the layout was bizarre,, Dairy DEPT was scattered in like 5 differENTt places around the store , but I ll miss the place.
This place sucks..really bad produce..expired product..not hot-hot food and warm cold food..not great variety and sale prices always wrong or product doesnt exist..oh rude cashiers too!
The produce and organic selection is infinitely better than the Key Food on 86th and Amsterdam. However, I agree completely in that the employees were relatively unpleasant, the layout and navigation is tricky (even for someone in their mid-20’s), and the hours were poor (it closes at 9pm).
I am not surprised it is closing.
I really WANTED to like it; the one at 85th Street has low prices but is cramped and pretty rundown. But there was just something “off” about the place, a combo of a bizarre layout, the cement industrial floors and a strange bluish cast to the lighting that somehow added up to the whole being less than the sum of the parts. It never seemed busy when I was in there. It’s a shame, like others, I was rooting for it to work…
Regarding the layout of the store… I don’t know of many of any supermarkets that have a good layout. I find it hard to navigate in most of them. At least the ones in the city aren’t as confusing and exhausting to walk and navigate as the many that are outside city and are the size of football stadiums.
Worst. Designed. Market. Ever.
I hear that the owners from Westside Market might be interested in taking it over, that would be a perfect spot for one. They do a nice job.
I do like the Westside Market but I don’t think their prices are that reasonable. Especially for low income tenants who still live in the area. Including myself.
