A high-end retailer, a cafe and some salons have closed as other local businesses are opening or expanding.
The windows are papered over at Helmut Lang on Columbus between 70th and 71st street and the store appears to have been completely cleared out. No one was answering the phone there and we are awaiting a response from the company’s p.r. team. Alskling, which is on the same block, also appears empty, although it’s not yet clear if it’s closed for good (that store has allowed other stores to open temporary pop-up shops in the past). Thanks to Marc V. for the tip and photos.
Purdy Girl, which closed its location on Columbus between 81st and 82nd, is opening a new location on the East side of Amsterdam Avenue between 82nd and 83rd street, te former home of Taroo. Thanks to Terry for the tip.
The Oleg Kaz Salon on Broadway between 88th and 89th street has closed down. Thanks to Natalia for the tip.
International Hair on 66th and Amsterdam has also closed. It was right next to Furry Paws, which closed a few weeks ago. Will a larger tenant combine the spaces?
Red Stone Cafe at 140 West 72nd street, an employee told one of our tipsters. We’ve made several attempts to contact them but no one has been picking up the phone. The cafe opened just a few months ago.
Records for clients of optometrist Dr. Stuart Blankman, whose office at 2472 Broadway closed suddenly after 48 years, are being sent to Pildes Optical at 2165 Broadway.
Another dog shop has closed, a tipster tells us. “The New York Dog Shop on West 73rd Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue has closed. Camp Canine, the doggy day/overnight place next door, will likely be expanding their shop by taking over the lease of The New York Dog Shop.” The phone number now directs people to the company’s New Jersey location. Not surprised at the closing of Red Stone Cafe. The first time I went there shortly after they opened, the woman behind the counter was quite pushy at wanting me to order more than just a sandwich. I told her a sandwich was fine. I paid with a credit card and as the slip came out of the machine the woman handed it to me with a pen and said “Your price is here – and here is where the tip goes.”
TIP?
I signed for the sandwich (only OK, I’ve had better) only.
The woman’s attitude was a huge turnoff, and I’ve never been back.
(Now, Simit & Smith a few stores away on 72nd. is another story. Delicious sandwiches, the best lentil soup ever and pleasant and helpful people behind the counter. There I will leave something in the tip jar!)
Helmut Lang will become Theory Men
Askling will be another popup
Read Stone Cafe had a strange vibe inside…to much food prepared and sitting in the window, and I rarely saw more than one or two people inside. Simit and Smith is the best…. PB and J on a Simit- I die!
