The future home of Risoterria.
The Upper West Side’s new or upcoming businesses include a fitness studio, a tribal artifacts shop and a gluten-free restaurant. Meanwhile, a discount store had a very short stay on Broadway.
A new gluten-free restaurant is going into the space formerly occupied by Westway Foods, the deli at the corner of 78th street and Amsterdam Avenue. Risoterria, which has another location on Bleecker Street, is aiming to open by early April, according to DNAinfo. “As with the Bleecker Street spot, risotto will be the centerpiece of the menu at the new location, along with Neapolitan pizza and Paninis — all of which are gluten-free. The Amsterdam Avenue restaurant will also sell gluten-free baked goods, including homemade ciabatta, cupcakes, pound cake and bread sticks, among other items.” The new spot is also expected to serve gluten-free pasta. Check out their Bleecker street menu (pdf).
A holiday pop-up store selling tribal artifacts mostly from Africa, just opened on Amsterdam Avenue between 82nd and 83rd. It’s in the former home of a State Farm office, which has moved to 180 West 80th street.
Pure Barre, a fitness studio that uses ballet techniques, is opening at 412 Columbus Avenue (80th), the former home of HomBoms Toys, according to Real Estate Weekly. That stretch of stores has turned over very quickly to become more upscale, with jewelry store Alexis Bittar also moving in, and broker Faith Hope Consolo is clearly thrilled: “This grouping represents an exciting new retail profile that will better serve the community that lives and shops in the immediate area,” said Consolo. “We are closer to completing the assemblage of a demi-block front with this innovative fitness company, which is being situated next to a beloved jewelry designer and chic women’s clothing and accessories boutique.”
Ten Below, the discount store on 101st and Broadway that just opened a few weeks ago, is already on its way out, and is not being shy about its closing sale. Thanks to Ruby for the photo.
Also closing: any interest I once had in going to Cesar Ramirez’s Brooklyn Fare. Have you seen the allegations regarding his bias against Asians and Upper West Siders?
what does Bklyn Fare have to do about anything mentioned in this post? Have you read Cesar’s thoughtful response? Allegations by former disgruntled employees are just that, allegations – don’t rush to judgement. Innocent before PROVEN guilty.

Wow! Who are all these “all-e-gators” and what are they doing so far from their normal home in the Everglades?
😉
I am not a court of law. I do not require proof. I’ve heard rumors about this guy from day one, and there are better ways to spend $400 anyway.
I used to go to Risotteria in the West Village many years ago before we defected to the UWS. This was before the ludicrous gluten-free craze. Their risottos are awesome. Not sure what the point of the other things are.
Ten Below is already closing?? WTH man! Why?
Did an earlier version of this story report that Harry’s was closing?
That was a prior story: https://www.westsiderag.com/2014/12/01/openings-closings-upper-west-side-harrys-burritos-radio-shack-plowshares-coffee
Could someone please translate broker Faith Hope Consolo’s quotation into English for me?
I understand it to mean that she believes that neighborhood should be for affluent, upscale people and the real estate industry is hard at work to ensure this. (And perhaps she is hinting that people who don’t fit this upscale demographic profile should just move out?)
Risoterria is fantastic! Can’t wait until April! I hope they also have g-free beer like the West Village location.
Cafe Con Leche is closing as well due to absurd rent increase!
