The Upper West Side will get its first full-scale coworking space when The Yard at Lincoln Center opens at 67th street and Columbus Avenue on November 17. The 30,000-square-foot center will hopefully fill a need for a lot of Upper West Side freelancers, startup business owners and others who have been working from home. There are no other spaces like it on the UWS, although there are several in more startup-friendly areas like Brooklyn and the Lower East Side.
Co-working, or sharing a large space divided into smaller sections, is a cost-effective way to work in a space set up for business use — conference rooms, hi-speed internet, tables and chairs — and collaboration.
The Lincoln Center space at 157 Columbus Avenue will be on 2 floors and be divided into spaces of various sizes. People can rent an office for one to six people, or work in a shared space, and they’ll have 24/7 access to the space. There’s more detail here and we have the prices below. Here’s the website.
Sharon Schanzer, an entrepreneur who works in graphic design and business development, has been trying to get a space like this to open in the neighborhood for the past year. She said she’s impressed by the space.
“I toured the space yesterday and it’s beautiful. There are communal and private offices, large conference rooms for use (included in the rent), phone “boxes,” lounge areas, wired connections (great if you have a VOIP phone like I do) and of course a coffee and kitchen area. The space is bright and welcoming. It’s on 2 floors totaling a whopping 30,000 sq. ft.”
If you mention Sharon’s name when you sign up, you can get 20% off for your first month.
There’s a similar space in the Lehigh Starrett building at 601 West 26th Street, the Center for Social Innovation, (C.S.I.). The concept was begun in Toronto.
This is great news, and the UWS is joining the 21st century!
Although it is The Hat Factory in San Francisco that’s credited with coming up with the concept of co-working.

As a young business owner, I am so excited to see a space like this in my neighborhood. I will definitely be checking this out.
shopgirl – what kind of business do you have? i am always networking!
Sounds nice, but a bit pricey compared to what’s available downtown. I guess it’s a write-off 🙂
Hey ! How about one of these to serve greater Washington Heights N and S as well as all of Harlem and Inwood…and maybe even the UWS North of 110th St.
