What a long strange trip it’s been for a mini-dachsund named Duck who was originally lost on the Upper West Side.
The dog’s owners posted the following message on the Facebook page Find Duck around 5 p.m.
“WE HAVE DUCK. He’s back in our apartment, and just got the most sorely-needed bath of his life.
The story from today:
Around 2:40 pm, I got a call from a man who had seen one of our signs in Harlem. (Quick aside: Signs that never would have gotten up without all of your help!) He told me that he had seen Duck in Pulaski Park in the Bronx yesterday around 2 or 3pm. We grabbed our things and hopped in a cab to the Bronx.
On the way there, the man called me back to say he was in the area and was following Duck! We met him there, and he led us to a small forested strip separating E 134th St. from the Major Deegan Expressway. We went in through a break in the fence and, after a minute or two of searching, Duck ran up to me and jumped into my arms.
Duck was still wearing his harness and his tag. He was also wearing a prong collar which we did not put on him. This suggests that someone had him and let him go (or he escaped), which would explain how he made it across the river.
We are so, so grateful to all of you for everything you have done. Duck wouldn’t have made it home without you all. We’re about to take Duck to the vet, to make sure everything’s okay. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Best news of the day.
A prong collar they hadn’t put on him? Sounds like the lucky pooch may have escaped from being bait to train another dog for dog fighting.
The prong collar is likely from the dog walker. From the postings I read, the leash or clasp broke. Aside from that, it is one long trip for a little dog and it makes you wonder.
Many people use prong collars especially with dogs prone to escape. Despite popular opinion, when used properly, they do not hurt the dog and are actually safer than a choke chain, which can push on the esophagus, or a harness or collar which many dogs can slip out of.
That’s exactly what I was thinking. Esp w/ the prong collar, age of the dog, etc. Thank G-d the little guy is ok!
I’m so glad!
slow news week, huh?
Not slow enough to keep you from making your stupid comments….
You read it. If you have a dog and have ever had the horrible experience of losing it, you’d get it.
Glad duck is home safe.
I am elated at the news. Your prayers were answered and I’m glad you have your pooch safe and sound. He’s a cutie! It’s terrifying to think what you must have been going though. I’m glad you have him back. James, you’re an imbecile. The only explanation I can think of for such cynicism is that you were abused growing up, physically and/or emotionally, and simply don’t have the heart to understand. You’re pathetic, and perhaps some day you’ll experience deep painful loss, and then when you do, think back on your stupid and insensitive comment. I’d say I feel bad for you, but frankly, I couldn’t care less for you.
Marco here again. I see there are two dachsies. Who is the other one?
SO happy Duck is home!
@Carol Imagine what it would feel like to wear a prong collar and you might change your mind. Almost every vet advises against them.
Choke and prong collars are designed to punish dogs for pulling by inflicting pain and discomfort. They can cause serious physical and emotional damage to dogs and should never be used.
I am so happy duck was found! I have been keeping my eye out for duck on my nightly runs.. best news of the day!
So Happy for Duck and his family! Great news
I was at 100th/CpW area of Central Park the day Duck got loose running every which way. I’m a dog owner too and my heart sank when I saw the posters around town. I was so hoping the dog walkers had found him on the same day. So hearing this news today overwhelmed me with joy. It is truly an unbelievable story. Only wish Duck could tell us about his adventures!
Very relieved you got your dog back. I had been worrying about him. Know how despairing I would feel had I lost any one of my present or past dogs.
This made my day !!
I am SO glad this was a happy ending. I can not even imagine what the owners were going through! I thought about him everyday and on the lookout for him everyday I was on a walk with my dog.
Please don’t use a pack walker! Use a reliable person who walks no more than 2 dogs at a time, and do a surprise check during a walk. I cannot understand how someone couldn’t grab such a little guy with short legs before he got more than a couple of blocks away! So happy for him and for you – it’s horrible to imagine how scared and in danger your little dog was. Yay 😉
Such great news!! and great picture 🙂
How wonderful that you recovered Duck! Losing any pet is so traumatic…..just thinking of it give me a knot in the stomach.
This is such great news! I saw so many fliers with Duck’s face all over. Teamwork people. This is a relief.
To the person who said slow news week, there’s something missing in you. Sucks for you.
Yaaaaaaay! Loved reading this.
Well done, everyone! Duck’s a lucky pup!
I cried reading your story. I would have been there to help if I didn’t live on Nantucket Island. As the owner of four mini dachshunds, I followed every minute of it and am so thrilled that you have Duck safely back home. What an amazing story.
about the prong collar… i was told that both dogs were taken to Priceless Pets, the dog bolted on a walk…Priceless Pets uses prong collars on some of the dogs in their care. allegedly, of course, but info came from a good source.
