The Hamilton Senior Center on 71st street off of Columbus has a hydroponic garden on its roof, growing lettuce, cucumbers, basil and more. A horticulturist teaches the seniors how to care for the plants each week, and a nutritionist shows them how to cook. Along with the fresh vegetable program started by Gale Brewer, the UWS is becoming pretty innovative at helping seniors get access to healthy food.
The program is run by Project FIND, a nonprofit that works with seniors who have low to moderate incomes, as well as homeless seniors.

Seems like a wonderful program! Would be great to see this be more widespread.
Thank you for highlighting this example of our neighborhood at its absolute best.
Let a thousand hydroponic lettuces bloom!
My mother (RIP) had the greatest times
of her life at Hamilton House. She loved
their delicious lunches, their classes,
and their vibrant people.
I had no idea that they had a roof!
I do know that they are the most fun
and engaging seniors.
Silver Power!
The project is awesome. The Seniors benefit not only by the sustenance of the food they are able to grow, but by virtue of being active, the Senior Residence benefits because they receive good publicity – which they deserve!
Fabulous
