A man and a woman were shot on Amsterdam Avenue on Friday night, according to NYPD and a report at NBC.
UPDATE: The man arrested for the shooting was an off-duty police officer.
Details were still sketchy when we called police shortly before 11 p.m. An NYPD spokesman said the shooting occurred at 82nd and Amsterdam but did not have the time of the shooting. NBC News says there were two shootings — one at 83rd and Amsterdam and the other at 84th.
Witnesses said a large number of plainclothes officers immediately swooped in. One witness who shot video in the immediate aftermath of the shooting said a suspect was taken into custody on the scene.
“I was standing outside waiting for a table when some guy pulled out a gun and started shooting at people,” said Evan Roe. “When the cops arrived and arrested him, he was standing right next to me with his gun.”
The people who were shot did not appear to have life-threatening injuries, according to police.
One person contacted us via twitter about the shooting, saying she witnessed the shooting and that it occured about 9:30 p.m.: “Shots fired in front of Keeleys. Everyone went down. Cops got the guy, now crime scene tape everywhere.”
George Keeley’s Bar is at 485 Amsterdam Avenue, between 83rd and 84th.
Police did not have details of what precipitated the shooting. The spokesman said that someone was being questioned in connection with the shootings, but no arrests had been made.
We will update when we hear more…
Holy shit. Good job with the quick reporting, WSR. Hope everyone’s OK.
P.S. Please, everybody, don’t turn this thread into some wild speculative freak-out about a return to the bad old days. This is way out of character for the area.
