The Pet Health Store is being priced out of its current corner space at 81st street and Amsterdam Avenue, according to a manager we spoke to this week.
The Pet Health Store (a personal favorite) is known for strong customer service and knowledgeable staff. “You can call very late in the day and still get same day delivery (from John, the delivery man),” noted one Yelper. The store holds adoption events for animals outside of the store on weekends.
Pet Health is looking to move elsewhere on the Upper West Side and has “some prospects nearby,” the manager said. The store had been on a 10-year lease that had gradual step increases. But with the lease ending, the rate is going to jump.
A broker’s listing for the space says it will be available on November 1, 2014, and that the landlord will install a new storefront. The listing notes that the space “can be vented for cooking.”

I recently read taht Chick-Fil-A is coming to NYC – perfect spot for them!
that would be awesome. Love Chick-fil-A
sure – 81st and Columbus – such a prime location for fast food joint which is after American Midwest tourist.
I live on this block and really, really hope that this is not what ends up happening!
Damn. I love this store, and the staff.
Good store, nice, responsible people. Hope we don’t lose it. Love the broker’s listing: “Can be vented for cooking.” Yeah, just what we need…another restaurant. I love food and a good drink and we have lots of places that have both – like Citron, Papardella and Calle Ocho. Wouldn’t like the food biz to join the ranks of the banks.
This is so depressing!! This is one of the most convenient stores in the area for the many pet owners in the UWS. The staff is always so kind and helpful, truly a gem.
This is so disheartening. It seems everyday when I go on this website there is another story about a neighborhood store and or restaurant closing.
Yes, and another store opening up.
this is the nature of business.
I remember back in the 70’s when this corner spot use to be a check cashing place (which has sinced moved to 82/83 street).
Everything in this store is overpriced. You want pet products? Shop online. No shlepping.
Hoping they will re-open nearby and continue the wonderful weekend adopt-a-thons, as well as their helpful + pleasant customer service.
Always friendly with great service. Would be a real loss to the community.
It’s an eyesore.
i loe this store and hope it moves a bit further north to be nearer to where i live.
they have a great bargains table and their staff are very kind and caring and knowledgeable.
the landlord’s loss as they keep the place immaculate and add a touch of class to his building where other buildings’ storefronts are remaining vacant years after giving the boot to long-time reliable tenants.
vacant storefronts make other tenants worry what else is wrong with the building besides landlord’s greed and the possiblity of big-box stores overrunning the neighborhood.
sheesh. won’t anyone get a clue. no wonder people are moving out of nyc and manhattan in droves.
and businesses to ct and nj.
sheesh.
This space was the original pet food store called the Petbowl. I recall it being opened in the late 70’s or early 80’s. It was the first of its genre before Petco or any other pet specialty exclusive store. Those years before, I bought my dog food at Daitch Shopwell or Sloan’s supermarket. Petbowl also pioneered home delivery, so buying by the case or large sack, became apt friendly.
This TOTALLY sucks! I have been going to this store for 20 yrs.,when it was PETBOWL. Greed, greed greed! These STUPID landlords! If these landlords keep it up the UWS will be just banks and drug stores…..and eventually a ghost town!
or maybe it was not the fault of landlord who rented to them and pet bowl for decades.
so tired of that easy target.
A landlord that actually wants a food establishment as a tenant. Now that is really rare.
Most landlords don’t want anything to do with food shops or restaurants — unless, of course, the restaurant is high end — like Cesca.
Could this possibly be the new home for a restaurant run by Big Nick?
