The world lost one of its great musicians and activists when Pete Seeger died on Monday at the age of 94. Seeger had several connections to the Upper West Side, and played at venues like Symphony Space.
In October 2011, he led a march through the Upper West Side from Symphony Space down to Columbus Circle in support of Occupy Wall Street. We wrote about it here. Check out some amateur video from that event below.
Seeger doesn’t show up in the video below, but it shows the size of the march:
It’s hard to see Seeger in the video below, because he’s sitting down:

And what did these protests net? What, compared to the inventive entrepreneurs he wailed against for most of his life as a serious Stalinist?

Apparently Pete was unaware that the record labels he worked for were capitalist organizations.
He was a heroes hero. Kind and gracious. He He was fiercely loyal to music and those who had no voice. He fought the “man” when they tried to silence him and changed the world. He brought a warm glow to all he touched and he will be missed. I will think of him every time I hear a banjo or see a large sailboat. I will miss him every time I walk out my door to travel along the Hudson River. He was simply the very best of the best, but most of all he was my hero’s hero.
amen
Pete Seeger was an is a transcendant, iconic figure in the struggles of the 20th (and into the 21st) century in the United States. He was an AMERICAN figure who volunteered for the Army in WWII and served with distinction. It is amazing that anybody could be a close collaborator of the great Woody Guthrie and ALSO the great Bruce Springsteen — but Pete did it. he also was a close collaborator of MLK Jr and SNCC.
Just like Joe Hill, where working men and women wer fighting… there you’ll find Pete Seeger.
what is it with these nasty commenters on this site? trashing Peter Seeger? really?
So I assume you’re in full disagreement with Israel’s policy of forbidding its national orchestras from playing Wagner?
