The Upper West Side is getting more fresh baked goods.
The neighborhood’s second Birdbath Bakery opened on Thursday at 80th street and Broadway across from Zabar’s. Birdbath is an eco-friendly (some might say eco-obsessed) spot owned by City Bakery: “Our menus are seasonal with foods made primarily from organic ingredients, regionally grown. The bakeries are built from recycled, found, vintage, and sustainable materials. Birdbath is wind-powered, and the food is delivered from our main kitchen in bicycle-powered rickshaws.” People who arrive by bike or skateboard get discounts (yes, I know, I also agree that pedestrians should arguably get discounts too). The other UWS location is on Columbus and 85th.
The big question: will Birdbath become competition for Zabar’s noshing crowd? Thanks to Rebecca and Jeff for the tips, and to City Bakery for the photo.
The neighborhood will soon get a By the Way Bakery, which is a Westchester chain known for offering gluten-free and dairy-free treats. By the Way will open in the former home of Scoop Ice Cream on Broadway between 90th and 91st streets. At the Hastings-on-Hudson location, they serve tea cakes, muffins, cupcakes, the whole lot. Check out the full menu here. “[I]n case you were wondering about the name, it refers to the fact that the missing ingredients are not something you would notice, but are rather an afterthought,” says one article on the store. Thanks to Ken and Marsha for the tips.
Cannot wait to try it
By the Way .. We have too many bakeries on the UWS . How about something different
Too many bakeries? Is that possible?
Nah. Don’t think it is!
BirdBath is a great place. One of my favorite spots to grab a coffee and scone.
I love Birdbath too! And, BTW, they make some delicious gluten-free cookies.
I live around the corner from the 85th location. Everyday I see the same van pull up to the store and unload baked goods…rickshaw my a$$.
…and there are rarely any customers in the 85th Street location.
Probably b/c the customers’ rickshaws (hmmm…Rick Shaw … wotta great name for a novelist or playwright!) broke down … or their wind-powered pterodactyloons ran out of wind.
A little birdy fresh out of his Birdbath revealed that the company’s next great Eco-Vention will be …………………..ta-daaa!: SQUARE WHEELS on all vehicles …. to slow them down and make them traffic-friendly.
