Three tipsters have sent in word that there was a shooting on 93rd Street off of Riverside Drive on Friday night around 8 p.m. One said that a delivery man had been held up at 316 West 93rd Street.
Emily Baer, one of our reporters, said that multiple witnesses confirmed hearing gunfire around 316 West 93rd Street. Baer and others saw four police cars and an ambulance at the scene.
“One lady in her 20’s on a bike reported that she saw two young men running up at the intersection of West 93rd and West End,” Baer wrote.
Update: An NYPD detective told us that a man with a gun robbed a 20-year-old man around 8 p.m., with the robber still on the loose. It was unclear how much money was taken. The detective said they didn’t have reports of a shooting at that location.
Let us know if you saw or heard anything.
My wife and I heard it. We are on 94th back of building facing toward 93rd. We agreed it sounded like a gun but weren’t sure. This confirms it.
Not connected to the rash of violence by the homeless shelters in the area, I’m sure.
I was very disapointed not to see DNAINFO cover this despite notificaion.
A neighbor tells me this is what happened: A deliveryman had made his delivery at 316 west 93rd Street. After the delivery – he was robbed at gunpoint. As the robber fled, he fired a shot. No one was injured. Investigation is ongoing.
This was the report from last night, it did not go out as a shooting but as an armed robbery.

Richard, ur right! Since they opened up these homeless shelters, upper west side has gone to shit. We, upper west side residents, need to come together and have these things shut down. I am not paying over $3,000 a month to be afraid to walk out of my building. Its getting out of hand & something needs to be done.
I do not understand how much longer progressive left leaning people (like me!) will continue to fall prey to this scam/farce. The City Homeless commissioner could build this homeless shelter in the Bronx for 1/10 the cost, where it belongs, near where its constituents can begin their transition. And instead of being temporary which is idiotic (think about it: they are taking homeless people and actually forcing them to defer doing anything while the taxpayer hemorrhages $!), it can be permanent. There is one reason it does not work this way. If the budget were only $1,000,000 for a Bronx shelter, the former Commissioner would be able to skim only 1/10 what he can if he forces it into the UWS where the cost is 10x. When will progressives grow up and fight for what is RIGHT? This is WRONG and we are being USED to advance it. Pathetic. This is not a progressive cause, it is a crony capitalist/insider corruption at its worst cause.
Sorry, and the WORST part is that this loser politician thug is only able to steal maybe $1 or $2m from this $10m charade, but the social cost is going to be tens if not hundreds of millions in property damage, wealth destruction, injuries, lost human output, and lost lives. If only we could all chip in the $0.10 each he is doing this for so that he would not have to risk the lives of hundreds of thousands of us.
I’m finding it hard to connect that to the homeless shelter, as we have had other issues with and without it. I’m sorry for the delivery man – I hope he is all right.
Demonizing the homeless isn’t going to help. People who become homeless may be good people who have run into trouble. Life is not that easy for them; all this hatefulness is not helping.
You are making my point. You criticize me for pointing out clear corruption by implying I am not sensitive to the interests of the homeless. Nothing could be further from the truth. Instead of 10 working homeless shelters in appropriate locations, we have 1 dysfunctional one and it is a result of corruption. If you really support the interests of the homeless, you will put them ahead of corrupt politicians. That’s what this is about, not homelessness. Your comment is the classic smoke and mirrors that allows for the perpetuation of this corruption. Shame on you, and wake up!
I am awake. I’m also not raving. It helps to remain clear in your thinking. Take some deep breaths.
Just wondering if there is as much violence on the EASTside?
I was there a few minutes later. Evidently it was a man in a white hat who walked – or ran – down the street and just shot at random at nothing in particular – i.e. it apparently was not actually a mugging and it was only one man not tow. It did happen as he passed 316 west 93rd st.
Along the lines of community safety, something very alarming has happend on 94th Street: The Fountain House (which has a stellar reputation) has withdrawn from their postion as service prodiver at the Lantern Group’s St Louis project (LG does not have a stellar reputation.) Fountain House withdrew because they encountered very serious managment issues within Lantern Group that made the relationship impossible. This should be of grave concern to the community. Fountan House has a great reputation and now they have left with no experienced or equally reputable service provider to replace them. 60 mentally ill residents will be moving in – in early January.
Being concerned about ones own safety and the safety of family members and guest does not make one insensitive to the plight of the homeless. If there are violent incidents relating. To these shelters those incident put everyone at risk including the homeless. The City has a responsibility to keep us safe but the Mayor only seems to think he has a responsibility to developers. The rest of us are unimportant .
Mentally ill drug addicts who can easily afford Drug War era narcotics merely by begging in the upscale UWS are the easiest to “community organize” on voting day.
Thank you David for explaining the situation correctly.
I always say, if you really cared about these folks , you could help twice as many (or more ) at half the price in less expensive locations then manhattan.
But , Pedistrian the knee jerk that bloomberg cares only for developers is not true at all. He clearly has a left wing agenda. the owners of these SROs are not allowed to convert their own privately owned buildings to the highest and best use – which in a free country they should be allowed to. So they upgraded the buildings and created a niche – affordable but nice hotel rooms for budget travelers. Gale Brewer and Rosenthal did not like this, so they sponsored a law outlawing it – so what are the owners to do? they are backed into the corner and ANOTHER agency of the same City came to them with tons of money. Clearly this is all back room corruption. As Gale and Rosenthal are saying they have nothing to do with it , yet it is the Same City government pulling all the strings.
And yes UWSers you are being manipulated because your progressiveness makes it easy for all this to occur.
enough is enough
This is not true about the hotel rooms being “nice” – plus it is likely the owners were taking only cash (no credit cards mostly) not paying the required hotel taxes to the city. Rooms were small and horrid with bedbugs. Also the kids “tourists” were loud with with beer drinking and cigarette smoking on the streets.
Bad-mouting Gale Brewer does not offer a solution.
You shoud examine the real MONEY flow behind the DHS. This is the really robelm. You ramble on about city oficials but you offer no true solution – these SRO’s s are here to stay due to zoning- so what is really the best use for the community is making thm into safe, viable affordable housing like on 93rd street – there are 6 of them btw RSD and WEA on 93rd and they are very nicely run and quiet.
For those of you who still do not think Gale Brewer has an agenda to fill the West Side with her constituents of vagrants and mooches , all at taxpayer expense – from her own email

Jamal, Sorry , I am confused – you are opposed to affordable housing?
Thank you for asking. I am all for affordable housing for all.
I am opposed to government programs which on the face look like they encourage housing for less, but in actuality costs everyone except for the lucky (or connected to politicians) who get the apts.. The City and pandering politicians like Brewer want you to believe this is helping when it does not. AND sorry but it is not fair for some to pay less then others , especially when the others are paying for it.
Enourage MORE construction with less red tape , ticktes, delays , approvals, graft, union corruption, and YUP less taxes ( 1/3 of gross income from rents go to the city right now). You will then have MORE housing for everyone. This is how it works in the entire United States.
