News:
The city DOT is planning to inspect and educate delivery bicyclists on the Upper West Side as complaints continue to pour in about delivery guys constantly disregarding city laws. But Gale Brewer and others have been talking to businesses about this stuff for years, to little apparent effect. Brewer wants to change laws to charge businesses when their bicyclists break rules, as opposed to the bikers themselves. (DNAinfo)
Some strange local crimes in the past week: a man was arrested for spraying another man on 74th between Amsterdam and Columbus with liquid from a pink bottle that caused his eye and face to hurt and swell; the motive was unclear. Two men walked into the Sunglass Hut on 79th and just started swiping Prada and Gucci sunglasses. After pushing workers away, they escaped. (Clearly we need to start arresting everyone wearing Gucci and Prada glasses). (NY Press)
Hold the phone! Congressman Charlie Rangel’s lead over challenger Adriano Espaillat has shrunk considerably since Tuesday as numerous election districts initially recorded no votes at all. By next week, the lead could be gone altogether. (Daily News)
NYPD crime report manipulation is common, says study. (NY Times)
The “education” of delivery cyclists (both pedal and electric powered) will come to naught. And, we still suffer from a hord of bicyclists, today fully empowered, disobeying red lights at virtually every intersection (and I sincerely apologize to the small percentage of bikers that do stop for red). Were this properly planned, it is entirely possible the mix of pedestrians, bikes and cars in our city would – in the words of the late Rodney King, “Get along.” But when you live with a situation like the one that exists on Broadway and 56th, with a dedicated left turn for bicyclists (of whom there are none), congests auto traffic for blocks, it tends to escalate tension and division.
